Driver needed for DVD\CD-RW failure

Hello
I'm having the same trouble a lot of people are having when trying to write
info onto a disk. I receive the error message, "there is no disc in the
drive. Please insert a writeable CD into drive D". I want to try to
re-install the drivers. The drive used to work (I think!), so I'm guessing
that the driver could be corrupted. However... (isn't there always one?!) I
need to know where I can download the driver from. According to the driver
info in the properties window, Microsoft are the provider. I can't find it
when I search the online driver list but, to be honest, I'm not really sure
if I'm searching the right information. The options I have for the name of
the driver is:

RICOH DVD+RW MP5240A
or a driver version no 5.1.2535.0

and the exterior of the actual drive itself doesn't give away many clues,
either: Compact disk rewriteable, high speed, RW, DVD+Recordable.

It's silly. The device must have a driver name because it says the provider
is Microsoft and therefore should be on this site. I need the driver because
I bought the computer with everything installed, so I don't have any info on
disk. Or maybe it's just me being a right muppet! Can anyone help out please?
:(

If you're definitely putting a new BLANK disk in the drive, its probably the
medium(disk) brand. I would check the drive maker's website for a firmware
upgrade. If you can't find the manufacturer there are forums on the web that
should point you to a firmware update for your brand of drive. I think one is
CD Freaks or something like that.

I think he said he didn't have the XP CD so he might be out of luck. I'm not
sure if MS service packs would have a new driver located inside he could
update/replace it that way.

You say you have a DVD+R drive. Are you certain your DVD media is the
correct type? Unless your drive is a dual format drive and rated to work
with either the "+" or "-" formats you can't use a "-R" disc with a drive
that is only rated to write to "+R". Look on the disc. If it says it is -R
or -RW and your drive is only a +R/+RW can't use the disc. You will need to
purchase +R/+RW

If you have the correct media for the drive do you have third party software
capable of writing DVD? XP can not natively write to a DVD disc like it can
to a CD-R. You need third party software to do that. Perhaps in the past
you've been able to write to CDs using the drive but now in trying a DVD it
isn't working because of that fact. New versions of most CD burning software
like Nero, Easy Media Creator, RecordNow Max etc can also write to both CD
and DVD. If you do have such software installed you may have to change the
settings within the software in order for it to recognize the media. If you
don't have third party software there is a very nice freeware app called
CDBurnerXP Pro that works nicely http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

XP installs a generic CD-Rom or DVD-Rom driver by default. Your device
should work fine with it. If you are certain the driver is damaged you could
try removing the device through Control Panel->System->Hardware Tab->Device
Manager button->DVD/CD-Rom drives. Then Ok out and reboot the computer. XP
will find the device and reinstall it's driver.

Your comment "The drive used to work (I think!)" is a bit troublesome. When
was the last time you used it? Another problem could be hardware related. A
dirty laser lens can be the culprit. You can open the drive tray and blow a
few short blasts of compressed air into he drive slot (hold on to the straw
so it doesn't accidentally shoot into the drive!) Or perhaps the drive
itself is dying.

Another issue can be the CD-ROM/R/R-W laser, will not be the same as the
DVD-ROM/R/R-W laser, and I've seen where the DVD one will fail, thus all the
DVD functions are caput, but the CD one still fully functions, so all CD
actions work 100%.

Try using a media (brand) that you know worked before. If it works then its
the media. I had the same problem when I bought a 50-pack of Memorex DVDs and
they wouldn't work when the Maxell's I used before did. I almost chucked the
drive until I heard about firmware upgrades for media compatability, I
updated it, and then the Memorex disks worked.
