Driver for External Tape Drive

I am running MS 2000 Pro - I was able to sucessfully load the softward for a
5GB HP Colorado Tape Drive and the software upgrade. When the tape drive
wasn't recognized I found and for the program, and update for driver and
there was also a 3rd download for a driver patch (renamed a .sys file) -
Here's the problem....when I try to load any driver at all for the tape
drive, the computer finds what it says is appropriate driver and then shuts
down immediately when I press "next" to finish installing it.

What Service Pack level is your W2K?
How is the external tape drive attached?
