Drive name appears before drive letter

Okay this may seem to be a simple question but I can't find anything on it
anywhere. In windows explorer for each drive I get a drive icon, then a name
such as HP Pavilion, then the drive letter in parenthesis (C). Before I had
the drive icon, then the drive letter then the name, I think - all I remember
for sure is that the drive name came last. And now for some reason when I
put a disk in the CD or DVD drives the volume name becomes truncated to no
more than 15 letters, it used to go whatever length I had named it. The only
updates I've done are the latest from Microsoft update. Don't know if that
affected it or not since I didn't pay that close attention to when the naming
thing started, I just slap in a DVD and play it. Oh yeah, I did do one other
update recently it was from HP to update to Sonic's Record Now version 7.
Also every system restore I've tried fails just says it was unable to
complete the restore. Any help appreciated. I have SP2 installed and have
had since it came out with no problems.

Thanks to both Wes & Jim. I should have known since I used TweakUI with 98,
just never really checked it out for XP. And I see what you mean about the
order being messed up. I had to use the "never show drive letters" option to
get what I wanted. I'll probably have more questions because I still don't
know why I can't get longer volume labels, actually why can't I burn a DVD
with longer volume labels. Anyhow good to know how to make the changes in
the registry so I don't have to depend on TweakUI. Like I tell my brother
when he asks "how do you do that?" - there's at least 3 ways to accomplish
anything in Windows.

I don't know how to do this without tweakui, but with it it's easy. The
switch is under My Computer/Drive Letters.

Unfortunately, that's not effective. This is a per-user setting, but
(as it often does) TweakUI doesn't present it unless you're an
administrative user.

So you can _set_ it as an admin user, but it won't propagate to
limited users. And you can't set it as a limited user.
I'd be glad to learn a non-tweakui, non-regedit route to this.

Indeed yes, since that would seem to be the _only_ route.

I always thought that my Cd burning software was designed for DOS, it has
the 8.3 name limitation. ;-)

FYI, the 'weblogs' one has a number of good tips, but not about

Actually, Stan, all of those tips are part of TweakUI.

TweakUI
[+] About
Tips

You can cycle through the tips with the Next Tip and Previous Tip buttons.
But, if you click the Save Tips button, you get Tweak UI Tips.txt which you
can save wherever, with all of the tips in a Notepad file.

That was where I discovered this tip...

[[Hold down the shift key when switching to thumbnail view to hide the file

I just added that to me canned TweakUI post. ;-)

Here's another tip.

You can also add TweakUI to the Control Panel with
xp_AddTweakUItoControlPanel.vbs from
here...
1. Add XP TweakUI Icon to the Control Panel

Thanks for the other links, especially for

FYI, the 'weblogs' one has a number of good tips, but not about
TweakUI. It mentions TweakUI only to link to Microsoft's download

So the Web page is just a duplicate of text in TweakUI?

Putting aside questions of legality, what's the usefulness? I must be
missing something.
