Drive Letter Changes

D

Today, for no apparent reason, Windows changed a drive
letter without reason or explanation.
I have an external HDD that carried the drive letter "C".
(this identification took place when reformatting my
internal C drive which is now "H" )

The HDD is now identified as "E". As a result I cannot
open programs that require drive letter I.D. to locate
the directory.

How does one change drive letters?

Thank you for your input and assistance.

Go to Start->Run
Enter diskmgmt.msc
Select the partition that is mislettered, right click, select Change Drive
Letter

You cannot change the system drive letter from within Windows. The only way
is to re-format and start over again. When you do, disconnect all external
components except your monitor, keyboard and mouse before re-installing XP.

Follow the instructions for a clean install provided in the link below.

Hi
Drive letter and other disk management tools are done from the
'Computer Management' section of Administrative Tools which you will
find in the Start Menu if so enabled, or via Control Panel.

Open 'Administrative Tools', then Computer Management - the area you
want is "Disk Management'

The best way is to relabel the CD Drive first, to something above G in
the alphabet, reassign all the hard drives, then reassign the CD to
what you really want..
