Drawing In PowerPoint No longer Allow Me To Edit Them

B

briansestate

I used the drawing tools to make a few basic drawings and when I copied them
from one PP file to the next they developed a frame or border (transparent).
At first they allowed me to double click and edit them. Then when I saved
the document and returned the next day and double clicked on the same drawing
I get this error message: "The server application, source file, or item can't
be found, or returned an unknown error. You may need to reinstall the server
application." That message doesn't mean a whole lot to me as I pasted the
diagram from one file to the next and I should not need a source file to edit
it. And I don't know what "the server application" is or what that means.
Does anybody have a simple hint to allow me to edit the drawing without
having to stand on my head?

Odd. Which version of PPT are you working with?

Usually if you group a bunch of shapes and copy/paste them, you get that
same group of objects. A transparent border/frame will sometimes show up on
an EMF or WMF -- did you happen to save your group of objects as an image or
something?

I haven't look at Luc's url yet ... but no to your question, I did not save
it as a object or anything else, I just saved the file by clicking save. I
can send you the diagram if you wish to take a closer look I can upload it to
Microsoft's office live file sharing site. Let me get back with you when I
have completed the tasks.

Dana, By the way Thanks for the time and effort!!!

At least I know what a server application is but I remember now that I
created the original diagram in PowerPoint and then inserted it into Word and
then reimported into PowerPoint sometime ago. Then I went into PowerPoint by
opening it up and copied and pasted it into another PP file and began to edit
it. I was allowed to edit it only the first day the second day it gave me
the error message. So the server application should not be the problem as it
was originally created in PP and then word both of which are operational.
So, any help in getting this diagram editable would be most appreciated.

I'd downloaded it to microsoft's workspace.office.live.com and discovered
that I'll need an email address anyway so if you wish to see the diagram I'm
need an address or someother way of sending it to you. Dana ... See the
second reply as I finally remembered how I created the diagram in PowerPoint
and then inserted the slide into Word and then pasted and copied it back into
PowerPoint. Later I opened the file and then edited the file and then saved
it. The next day I opened it and was not able to edit the diagram. Boowhoo.

Inserting into Word and then moving back to PPT could be a problem.
Depending on how you did it, you could have an embedded Word OLE object or
any number of bizarre things that would give you the "server not found"
issue. (Like, if you didn't save the Word doc, but you ended up linking to
it by mistake...)

What I'd do at this point is ungroup the object on the slide. You'll
probably have to ungroup it twice.

I already tried to ungroup it and PP won't allow me to use the ungroup option
when I select the diagram. I got smart when I last posted and went looking
for the original PP drawing and was lucky enough to find it. Nevertheless, I
sure would like to know why I was allowed to edit it and then disallowed. I
find that it is a plus to import things into Word and then reimport them into
PP. I have been doing that for years as it enables me to resize things
without the text boxes getting all jumbled and the text wrapping, etc. I
usually in the old version go into insert object and choose a powerpoint
slide, select it then import it then set it to be infront of the text so I
can move it around without the text getting moved out of wack. Thanks again.
If you come up with anything let me know..... Dana ... I'm currently working
of turning PP into videos and have posted a few on the web at:

If the ungroup option is greyed out, then you're probably now working with
an image of some sort -- a jpg or a png or something.

Are you using PPT 2007? It works differently than previous versions.

In addition, Word 2007 does not use the same drawing engine as PPT 2007.

If your expected behavior is based on PPT/Word 2003 or prior, but you're now
using 2007, this could account for some of the issues you're running into.

If you need to resize your objects, try drawing them, then grouping them,
then Ctrl+X to cut and Edit | Paste Special (or Paste Special on the Home
tab) and choose EMF. You should be able to size that -- and ungroup it
(twice) if necessary. I would leave Word out of the picture. In fact, you
might be able to do this with the current object you have, I don't know. But
it's worth a try.
