Drag & Drop stopped working

Hi,

I'm running Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2 with all the latest updates
installed except for the Genuine Advantage update.

Today, I was using one of my frequently-used programs (Perforce's p4win),
and noticed that drag-and-drop was not working within the application. I
verified that it was working in Windows Explorer, but quitting and
re-launching Perforce didn't cure the problem. So, I decided that I should
reboot the PC.

I did so, and now drag and drop doesn't work in ANY application, including
Windows Explorer.

I have tried everything I can think of (different mouse, booting in
Diagnostic Startup mode via the System Configuration Utility, rebooting,
shutdown & restart) to no avail.

In Googling this problem, I found several mentions of what sounds like the
same problem, but unfortunately no solutions.

Please help! I'd love any suggestions for diagnosis, or if there's a known
solution, they would be most welcome.

Thanks,
--Mike

In case anybody else comes across this problem, I will post the solution that
a friend found on another web site.

Somehow, this resulted from damage to my registry. I have no idea what
would have damaged it, but the key was this. I had to run regedit and make
sure that the following three keys were present:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Interface\{0000010E-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\NumMethods

SHOULD BE: unnamed Value of type REG_SZ which is set to 12.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Interface\{0000010E-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid

SHOULD BE: unnamed Value of type REG_SZ which is set to
{0000030C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Interface\{0000010E-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid32

SHOULD BE: unnamed Value of type REG_SZ which is set to
{00000320-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

In the case of my PC, I was missing the entire
{0000010E-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} key and all of its sub-keys. So, I
added this key and the three key/value pairs shown above, and rebooted. I am
now back in business, with drag & drop working in all applications.

Hope this info is useful to someone else someday.

Best,
--Mike
