I had to accept or reject a LOT of cookies, and visit a few pages, before I
found the download. This is a new product to me.
Any other afc user comments, recommendations?

Thanks,

Having read ;

"The goal of the Dr.DivX 2.0 OSS project is to build an application
which is portable"

I decided to try it out on my USB stick. It wouldn't install without a
missing codec. The codec was included in a payware (demo) download.
After downloading that it wouldn't work either.

After having to download a large payware file that I didn't want, and
it not working, I decided that it was a waste of time bothering with
this program.

Remember when Divx was a free codec under development?
As soon as it was useable due to the *free* contributions they went
commercial. Hence the Xvid project.

I had a look at their site and it does state that DrDivx is free (so
far). It also uses the Lesser GPL license. extract from says
<q>
This license, the GNU Lesser General Public License, applies to certain
designated libraries, and is quite different from the ordinary General
Public License. We use this license for certain libraries in order to
permit linking those libraries into non-free programs.
<q>
Note that last sentence.
On principle I will not use anything from Divx however, it might be a
good app. and it might work with Xvid. Perhaps someone can try....?

Interesting: will you state why on principle will you not use Divx products?
And thanks for noting that last sentence. It's ambiguous.
I'll not download the app.

Hello,
and it might work with Xvid. Perhaps someone can try....?

no, it will not start, just give you a popup saying it needs at
least DivX 6.0 installed, which is the first only-payware version.

This product needs payware to work, so it's totally useless as
freeware or open source.

I'll stick with XviD.

Thorsten

As I briefly said before, They claimed they were making an "open source"
project, Divx, received a lot of free input and when they had a working
product went non-open source/commercial. I consider that sharp
practice.
In addition this is what they say about their product

<q>
Prior to July 15th 2004, we made DivX Pro 5 available for free under the
condition that an adware package was installed. The adware vendor we
selected was very reputable, but nevertheless raised concern among our
customers...............
Since July 15th 2004, when we released DivX Pro 5.2, no DivX software
has been released with an adware package.
<q>
but it costs
<q>
There are several reasons you might see connections to the Internet from
our software. The first two reasons are banners and version
checking..............
<q>

Ok, I have done a bit of selective clipping and don't want to get into
an argument about pro's and con's of adware but the bottom line is

I am somewhat paranoid and do not 100% believe Divx on their (self
proclaimed, innocent) data collecting claims. So I do not use it. Use
Xvid instead.
