downloading updates

ahhrrrrg!!! when downloading updates manually from the update screen...it
says downloading then... installation failed!....screen appears.

Does anybody know why? Then I click on the "see description of why it
failed" and follow it manually to the web-page and download directly from the
bulletin.

Is there another way? I have no firewall running, I shut it down.

I assume you mean updates from the windows update site. If that's the
case it would be best if you posted this to the experts in the Windows
Update Newsgroup: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate

Give more information on the description of your computer, what OS and
service pack level is installed and how your accessing the WU site -
dialup, broadband, etc.
