Downloading pictures

Since I've been downloading pictures of my new granddaughter, seems like my
hard drive is going down really fast.
Is there a way to store pictures on a computer without using so much hard
drive space?
I'm new to this and my computer is slowing down all the time. Using Picasa
as picture program.
Thanks.

..jpg (JPEG) is the smallest format. .bmp (BITMAP) is by way of being
the largest.
So best to convert to .jpg.

Assuming that your pictures are in the .jpg/.jpeg format, they are already
compressed about as much as possible. Burn the pictures to a CD or DVD and
then delete them from the hard drive.

Unless your computer is running out of sufficient space for the swap file to
operate, it is not the pictures that are slowing down your computer. Do you
run frequent scans with up to date anti virus and malware programs? Do you
have a ton of programs needlessly starting at boot? For the last question,
run msconfig.exe and look at the start up tab. If you don't understand what
an entry does, google it. Do not let applications start just because there
is a possibility that you may use it. Items pertaining to antivirus,
networking, etc., should be started. If you use a particular program daily
(for example, Messenger), let it start.

The fun of getting, or taking photos, will soon get out of hand. Even
if you store them as JPG, they can still take up space. And movies are
even worse.

If you have an older computer your main drive is probably small. A
good suggestion is to get USB external storage (drive). You can buy
them as a complete plug and play item, or buy the separate cabinet &
drive and put them together yourself. Still the end result is a place
to store the files other than your basic C: drive. And they come
large, anywhere from 250Gig to a terabyte or more.
