download with background graphic too slow

I've a graphic background on each web page (3 pages) with tables over the
top. On downloading the table text can be seen (and looks silly) until the
background graphic appears. Currently the graphics (by using the reports)
are 36, 29 and 27 kb, the reports show download times as 49 and 34 seconds
for 2...the page is www.ksstest.com.au any suggestions. I dont understand
dpi or resizing, I've all the programes just not sure how to do...so step by
step is good for me...

It also has to download.

Although the page opens quickly for me on a dsl connection.

I just did a bit of fiddling and it's opening quicker for me now too. I had
posted this message before, though can't find now...did you answer then
too....

When I had posted before, I was advised that only a 1/4 of the page could be
seen...is it tooooo big, I'm tooo lazy to re design, but I will if I have
too...any suggestions would be helpful

I'm just working on the navigation menu now....

Actually for me it was exactly half of the page.
But I have my resolution and viewport ( browser window ) set at 1024 by 768.
I'm also looking at it on a brand new, for lack of a better term, "high end"
machine.

Normally you wouldn't create your whole page as an image. You could be
using tables, cells, CSS, fonts, colors and some graphics to create the look
and feel you want. If you want to sue a big image then you have to resign
yourself to the fact that it's going to be slow and people may not come back
to the site. I would recommend redesigning the site.

Hmmmm, this all started in a table, but the image was too big, I don't know
how to 'slice' as yet, is that what you would recommend for each cell,
slicing (to get the same as the pic)

As for using CSS, I'm having problems getting started there...but thats a
whole other issue..

No. Use smaller images. A sliced image will almost always take longer to
fetch than the unsliced one.
