Download Problem

G

Guest

When I click on a link to download some types of files, the download dialog
box won't appear. Not even the download progress bar shows.

This is very annoying because whenever I click on a long .pdf or .rm file I
don't know if it's actually downloading.

I've tried checking and unchecking "Confirm open after download" in Folder
options but it still doesn't work. I even reinstalled Internet Explorer
without result.

Any ideas?

A stab in the dark...
Try this but apply it to the file types in question...

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

If not only .exe files, try this:

I did what you said but I have no problems with .exe files and there's no
Extension/.exe in that part of the registry

I also tried this: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;316537

The only file I could find was NPDocBox.dll. I deleted the key, renamed the
file and restarted the machine but it still doesn't work.

Any more ideas?

Then the dialog appears and it downloads to my hard drive.

The problem is when I left-click the link...

I thought you would apply that .exe example to the file types in
question.
I shall try and be more exact.

Re:316537
I cannot determine exactly what you have deleted as the invalid plugin
you mention (NPDocBox.dll) should have been in a key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.spop

Questions:

1. Did you delete that key?
If not, please do so.

2. Did you have anything else under this key?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension
If so, what?

3. Did you delete that key?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension
If not, then please do so.

4. If you deleted the key, did you check after a boot to see if it
returned?

1. Yes, I deleted that key

2. I don't remeber exactly, since I've already deleted that from the
registry. But I think it only had the subkey with npdocbox.dll.

3. Yes I also deleted that key.

4. No the key was still gone after I booted.

What should I do now?

Try deleting the affected file type in question. Associations such as PDF
can be recreated easily.

It would also be worth checking your settings within Acrobat. See if view
PDFs in browser is enabled. If so, disable it.

I've disabled view PDFs in browser. Now I get the download dialog where I can
open the File or save it. But when I press open, I get a small hard disk like
icon with
a red arrow on top with the message 'downloading from site.......' at the
bottom left of the status bar instead of the download progress.

I've also deleted the rm association in Folder Options and unchecked it in
Realplayer. However, .rm links in IE are still opened in Realplayer and I
still don't get the download dialog or the download progress bar. Not even
the hard disk like icon...

Is there any way to solve this?

G-Dogg,

You may be asking for something that doesn't exist; the hard drive icon you
describe doesn't have a status bar; has never had a status bar. This may be
a problem with the web sites in question, rather than with your system.

And how do you know if its gonna take 5 hours or 5 minutes to download that
pdf?

In any case, I'm sure that when you click on a Realmedia file a window
should pop up and show the download progress. My computer used to do that and
I have another computer with Windows XP and IE that still does it. There must
be a way to solve it...

G

Ok. That maybe so with pdf files.

But my problem with rm files doesn't have anything to do with Realplayer.

An IE window should pop up showing the download progress. It's the same
thing that happens when you click on wav files. But in this case that window
doesn't appear. It used to, but now it doesn't.
