Download problem after SP2 load

I have recently downloaded SP2 and since then the following occurs. On
booting up computer all web connections including my hotmail and favorites
take a very long time to load and instead of normal the page will gradually
load. After about 1 hour all returns to my normal speed. I do not allow auto
downloads, the task manager shows no other programmes running and CPU idle at
98%.What on earth could cause this please?

Try updating the drivers for whatever hardware you use to connect to the
Internet - ethernet network adapter or modem. Never get drivers from
Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

http://www.aumha.org/free.htm - Aida32 (hosted on Jim Eshelman's site)

Also make sure your computer is virus/malware-free:

"Don't Panic"

Drivers are OK, No virus or malware. This was OK prior to SP2 download and
as i said after a period of approx an hour all returns to normal, so it is
something introduced by SP2 and corrects itself after a period each time
computer is fired up.

Did you update the drivers? If not, that is an easy troubleshooting step and
helps to eliminate one possibility although I would think that the
slow-down would not "right" itself if drivers were the issue.

Something must be running for that hour to slow things down. Use Task
Manager to determine what is running. Look at Event Viewer to see if there
are clues.

Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

See if there is anything under scheduled tasks. Look at your antivirus
programs, etc.

1. Uninstall SP2 via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

2. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum.

Check for Hijackware

When all else fails, HijackThis (http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip)
is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware.

**Post your HijackThis log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or
other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**

3. Do not install SP2 until an expert gives your HijackThis log a clean bill
of health.
