download mail multiple times in Outlook?

My question is basically this:

But the answer there seems to apply only to Outlook Express, not
Outlook.

Does anyone know how to get Outlook to download mail left on the server
multiple times? Is there some file that says which messages have
already been downloaded?

I tried searching the group archives, but only found posts from people
who *don't* want multiple messages but are getting them anyway.

For what purpose? When you create a new profile Outlook will redownload the
messages;

The first time, we downloaded the new messages to a different .pst,
just testing to see whether everything was working [server crashed;
setting up new server & UPS]. That .pst is gone now and we'd like to
download the new messages to the .pst that has all the old messages.
But outlook thinks they've already been downloaded and isn't letting us
retrieve them from the server.
