.dot global templates

I am rather new to the concept of a .dot document in Word.
I find that I am able to set styles in the .dot file and
apply them globally. However, I am having difficulty
positioning my callouts. I would like the callouts on the
left side of the page to move in 1/4 an inch and the
callouts on the right to remain where they are. My only
option so far is creating two styles (left and right) and
applying them manually to each page in the document. Can I
use a .dot file to set these positions globally? If anyone
has any information, could you please share it with me?
Thank you.

How are you creating the callouts? Is this something that would be affected
by "Mirror margins"?

If you add a gutter, you will have to change the margins to accommodate it,
but that, in combination with "Mirror margins" (if the document is duplexed)
should do the trick.
