Hi there,

I've just purchased a Cardbus FA511 pcmcia NIC for my father's laptop
so that I can make an image of his hard disk.

I have a file-server running 2003 with a share that I want to send the
image to, and then install another o/s from the server to the laptop,
via networking.

This is because we do not have a cdrom for the laptop. (They dont make
them anymore)

In order to be able to image the laptop's drive, I need to be able to
boot into Dos with tcp/ip & access the network share on the
server2003.

I have tried building bootdisks using ghost 7.0 bootdisk builder and
using the netgear ndis2dos .dos drivers when I add a new card to
ghost. I have tried both versions of the drivers but it hangs when it
boots.

Ive also tried drive image 2002 boot disk builder, Barts network boot
disk (added the .dos files etc to a cab and made a protocol.ini) and
also Brads network boot disk.

None of them seem to work. The closest I got to booting was with the
version 2 .dos drivers in ghost but it still fails. Often it will
fail with error 33 unable to bind.

Im sure it has something to do with the protocol.ini file settings or
the fa511.ini file.

If you can point me in the right direction in what to try or settings
then I would be very gratefull.

Ps. I have made sure PnP o/s is switched off, but it doesnt have this
selection in the bios.

Thanks in advance,

Jonathan M. Clayton.

There are two ways of creating an image of a hard disk:

- The easy way: Split the hard disk in two (C: for Win2000 &
apps, D: for data), then create the image file on drive D:.
- The hard way: Create a DOS network boot disk in order
to store the image file on a networked machine.

Not only is it difficult to create a DOS network boot disk
but the image created of a single partition disk is often
very large, since it contains Win2000, all applications
and all user data.

I have created about twenty DOS network boot disks. I derived
all of them from the network boot disk creator that was included
with WinNT Server. Some of them were easy to create, some
hard, some impossible. You would need a good knowledge of
DOS, config.sys, IRQs, DOS memory management and a lot
of patience.

I recommend that you consider these options, arranged in order
of ease of use:
a) Split the disk, using a partitioning tool such as Acronis
PartitionExpert or PowerQuest PartitionMagic. This would
allow you to store the image file on drive D:.
b) Buy a $5.00 adapter so that you can install your laptop
disk as a slave disk in some desktop PC. This would allow
you to store your image file on the desktop disk.
c) Persist with the network disk. If you quote a valid EMail
address then I'm happy to send you a disk image file that is
suitable for an FA311 (but not for an FA511) adapter.
I estimate your chances of success at 50%, perhaps even
less since the DOS session may not recognise the cardbus.

Easiest way is to buy a USB network adapter, and then make a BART PE build
with ghost 8 on it, will detect USB devices automatically.

PS

Make sure it's USB2
