Doom3

Now I know that there is someone out there that is smarter than I am so here
is my problem. Doom3 crashes after about 15-20 minutes of playing. If I
start the game again without re-booting it crashes after about 5 minutes. I
have updated all my drivers, I have used the Microsoft help program to no
avail, I am beating my head bloody against the wall trying to figure this
out. I know enough about computers to be dangerous to myself but know enough
to leave things like the Registery alone. I am running a 2.15 AMD Athlon XP
with a nVidia-nforce2 1.x board. I am also running the NVIDIA (R)nForce(TM).
I also installed the SP2 just recently but I have no idea if this is the
problem as installed Doom3 after that. Is there anyone who can help someone
who is computer challenged?

I'm guessing that you mean the game is simply existing and going back to the
desktop rather then freezing the whole system. Do you get any error
messages?

You said you updated all your drivers, did you update your chipset drivers?

Also might be worth checking in Control Panel / Admin Tools and looking in
the event log to see if it's got any useful.

Could be heat, try playing with the case open. Could also be the PSU
underspec, do you know what you've got wattage wise?

I had the same problem and disabling AGP fast writes seemed to
help with crashing/freezing. I had issues with the sound cutting out
so I decided to wait for the first patch. There is an official doom3
patch now available. You can pick it up at www.3dgamers.com.
I plan to give the patch a try next week.

I have already downloaded the 1.1 doom patch and that didn't seem to help.
When Doom3 crashed it reverts to the desktop but then the desktop colors are
all out of wack, colors are not solid and the desktop is a tad fuzzy. I have
updated all my drivers to include my chipset. When Doom3 crashes I get no
error messages at all. I checked the event log and there were two errors
reported:
1. The server did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
2. The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer
-----that believes that is the master browser for the domain on transport Net
BT_Tcpip The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.
I do not have a clue what either means but it might be related to my home
network. I have tried disabling my home network and that did not work. As
far as heat goes I am running two fans internally and don't believe that is
the problem. It was mentioned that my PSU underspec could be the porblem but
bear with me (remember I am computer challenged) I don't have a clue what
that is or does. Also ditto for disabling the AGP fast writes. What I don't
understand is why id created a program/game that requires so much tweaking to
make it work. I have had no problems with C&C, Unreal, Freelancer etc but
Doom3 is a pain to get it to work. The graphics are awesome but rebooting
every 15 mintues takes the fun out of playing. Any suggestions?

Neither of those two error messages explain your problem with DOOM3.

PSU stands for power supply unit. Think of your power supply like a
generator. Components in your system only draw what they need to operate -
fans don't run faster unless the system is hot, graphic cards use less power
when running 2D Windows programs than 3D windows, etc. Since DOOM3 is very
processor and graphics intensive compared to your other games, its a safe
bet that your hardware is using the maximum draw. Power supplies decrease
in efficiency the hotter they get so a poor power supply may drop power
levels or create a "dirty" signal that causes your computer to crash because
one of the components isn't getting all the power it needs. What does the
sticker on your power supply say about it's power output? Who manufactured
your power supply?

What kind of graphics card are you running?

Thanks but I finally solved the problem. It appears that the drivers (even
though mine were updated) were not supporting the program. I contacted the
shop I had the computer custom built at and they said I had the specs and
more to run the game but suggested I down load a different driver through:
www.omegacorner.com
They have different drivers that although are not digitally signed nor
approved by Microsoft, the new drivers have made all the difference. For
anyone else who's screen crashes during the game I would suggest looking into
the Omega Corner for a different driver, they have them for most operating
systems.

Good point Moe! I mention the Omega drivers whenever
I post my video driver update instructions.

Bottom line: Glad you're running in top shape again! :)

Cheers,
Jimmy.
