Don't understand how to install IIS for FP

Please advise me if this is not the most appropriate NG to use.

I'm trying to install IIS on Win XP as part of my education on FP2002 (part
of Office XP). Firstly I am assuming that I can install IIS on the same
computer where I am running FP2002. Secondly I am assuming that I can
install IIS given that my home network is a peer-to-peer workgroup, without
a DNS server.

I have followed the instructions in the help system to install IIS via
Add/Remove programs. This procedure seems to work (more precisely, it does
not seem to fail), but I have no way of 'starting' IIS (if that is the
correct expression). Moreover, following the FP2002 Tutorial, I expected my
simple web, as developed in the tutorial, to be saved with the home page
called 'default.htm'. But it is saved as 'index.htm', indicating that IIS is
not installed. A closer reading of the help system says that 'TCP/IP
Protocol and Connectivity Utilities' is a pre-requisite, and that the
instructions for installting this are in the 'on-line documentation for
Windows XP'.

I don't understand any of this. How does 'TCP/IP Protocol and Connectivity
Utilities' differ to TCP/IP (which is installed, obviously)? What/where is
this on-line documentation? Searching microsoft.com for either of these
terms does not give a useful result.

Surely installing IIS can't be this hard or complicated?

You don't mention your OS. It must be Windows 2000 Pro (or Server) or
Windows XP Pro to be able to install IIS.
Once installed IIS will start automatically when you start your
Computer.
If you can browse to http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/ or
http://machinename/ it is working and running.
That Frontpage create an index.htm file instead of default.htm doesn't
mean that IIS isn't running just that you are not using it. To create a
Server based Web in FP type the adress when you create it as
http://localhost/webname/

Re: Don't understand how to install IIS for FPThanks for this advice. As per my original post, the OS is Win XP. It is Pro.

Following your advice I can browse to http://localhost/ and http://machinename/, but I get error msg 'You are not authorised to view this page' when I try to browse to http://127.0.0.1/ - even though I am supplying a user name/password which has administrator priveleges. Why is this?

I now have access to 'on-line documentation'. Thanks.

I should also like to understand what problems there will be, if any, for me running IIS on a computer which is a member of a workgroup, but not a domain.

Finally, using the IIS troubleshooter (in Win XP help system) last night, I was directed to try to browse to my computer's Netbios name. There were instructions on how to find this from My Computer. These instructions did not seem to conform with the information that my installation provided: all I can find is the 'Full Computer Name'. But In fact, I don't think I'm runnning Netbios, so there isn't a Netbios name for my computer. What have I misunderstood here?

Re: Don't understand how to install IIS for FPFurther to your advice I have now tried to create a single page web (as described in the Tutorial) as http://localhost/Championzone. FP gives the error msg:
"Could not find a web server at 'localhost'. Please check to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everyhting is correct, the web server may be temporarily out of service"

Sadly, I can't use this information:
1. I don't where, what or how to check that my web server name is valid. I'm trying to create a web site, not learn about web servers.
2. I don't know what makes settings 'proxy' or otherwise (this word 'proxy' looks like an adjective masquerading as an adverb, or perhaps it's a typographical error)
3. I wouldn't know how long to wait to see if this temporary condition changes, nor would I recognise when it changes.

It really does seem that installing IIS and using the FP Tutorial is as difficult and error prone as it first appeared.

After installing IIS you need to download & install the FP SE and then in IIS MMC apply them to the root web
See http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnservext02/fpse2002win.asp
- also see the administrator guide link on the above

You only have to do that if you want the FP2002 extensions, is sometimes best to install the FP2000
extensions with IIS and then once you have IIS and the extensions working, then upgrade to FP2002 if
needed.
