Don't have permission after re-enabling guest account?

G

Guest

I have an awkward problem. I had professional help with this problem before.
The problem is that computer A can see B but "does not have permission."
Computer B can see and connect to A just fine.

Maybe this is only bizarre to me, but the solution to the problem involved
changing the settings for the guest account on computer A. I had to change a
couple of settings so that there was no password and all the appropriate
permissions.

Circumstances arose, and I had to set a password on my computer. Likewise I
had to disable the guest account. Later, those circumstances subsided, and I
re-enabled the guest account and removed the admin password. Now, I am back
to the problem mentioned above. Keep in mind that the only change has been
the disabling and re-enabling of the guest account which I believe resets all
the changes that were made to the guest account (permissions and all that).

I think there are 2 or 3 places that I had to go and adjust settings for
this. Can someone help me with that? I'm going to include the ipconfig below
for what its worth, but none of that really matters with the problem that I
have. i'll post the browse thing in a bit.

Thanks,
Rev

Rev,

OK, the browstat logs show no problem there - both computers are visible to each
other ("There are 2 servers in domain IRKEN-NETWORK"). Let's concentrate on
actual permissions. This article will go over each setting which you want to
check first.

Thanks for the reply chuck. I spent HOURS going through your site yesterday.

I am using simple file sharing. I have Guest activated (via net user). I
made sure that neither one has a password, I think. My account doesnt have a
password, but I don't know if the Guest account does. I don't have the option
of resetting my password and when I go to reset the Guest password, I leave
it blank and hit <enter>. The reset password always appears for the Guest. I
exxpect this is because the option "users must enter a user name and
passsword to use this computer" is checked. Should reset password appear for
mine as well? Should I put a space or something in the password fields?

My restrictanonymous is set to 0. I ahve everyone in my guest
authentication list, and not guest.

Finally, The error message that I get when trying to connect to the other
computer is "\\Gir\shareddocs is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact admin... Access is denied."

perhaps needlessly I will repeat the other information. Gir can connect to
me fine. I cannot connect to it. And this was following the disabling and
renabling of guest as well as the adding and then removal of a main password.

Thanks again.

What's the actual path of "\\Gir\shareddocs"? Remember the limitations of Guest
access.

I'm not sure I understand the limitations of guest access. First, because
everything was shared fine before I decided to put a password on my system, I
don't see how it can be a limitation. Second, its C;\documents and
settings\all users\documents, so its not a special folder or anything. I know
you are just trying to cover all bases.

I checked your link this time. I don't know how I missed the
restrictnullSessaccess when searching through all this yesterday before
making the original post. I don't seem to have a registry for that. As in, I
do not have a registry called 'restrictnullsessaccess' in
HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters.
Should I? or is this only a problem if I have it and its set to 1?

Ok.. problem with the ACL stuff... I've been lost for quite sometime, only
to find out that I don't have the tab that I keep being referred to. If I
right click a folder, and click sharing and security, I have a 'General' tab,
a 'Sharing' tab, and a 'customize' tab. So, I'm not able to access this
security tab. Is there another way to get to it because I can't seem to
follow how. Also, the more I read about this, the more it sounds like this is
something that should be done on the other computer (Gir) and not mine
because its related to specific shared folders. Is there a way to access that
ntfs permissions without going to a specific folder?

Ok, I read the thing about disabling simple file sharing. And again this
seems relevent only to the other computer (Gir). I will try it anyway and
post back in a bit, but I don't hold out hope.

To re-iterate, the problem (originally, before I got professional help) was
the same as now, in that GIR can access TECHNOMANCER but not the other way.
The problem was on TECHNOMANCER and it involved access and permissions
relating to the creation of a guest account for GIR to access (despite the
fact that GIR already worked). Apparently, TECHNOMANCER would not read from
GIR without recognizing GIR has having an account, even though it let GIR
leech from me left and right. I don't intend to sound patronizing. I just
want to stress that some of these solutions (which I may be entirely
misreading) seem to focus on the other computer (GIR) and not mine. Am I
misreading your extremely descriptive links?

I'll recheck some permissions again..

Thanks for taking your time with me..

You need to be consistent with the passwords. What exactly did you do, to put a
password on your system? Did you change both computers, equally?

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Synchronise

Are both GIR and TECHNOMANCER running Windows XP Pro?

Other than requiring a common password, the Guest accounts on the two computers
are completely independent of each other.

All settings related to Guest access will be found on the server, not the
client. If you had a problem where you could not access TECHNOMANCER from GIR,
you had to correct the problem on TECHNOMANCER. If you have a problem where you
cannot access GIR from TECHNOMANCER, you'll have to correct the problem on GIR.

Thanks again for replying.

I've tried two things on the password. First, I went into user accounts and
set a password and then removed it. For guest, I used the 'user passwords2'
to reset the guest account, left them blank and clicked ok.

Next time, I tried putting a space in each spot for both paswords. this also
failed and actually made it so that neither computer could talk to each
other. I tried this again with test in both places. This also failed and
resulted in neither computer being able to talk to each other.

Finally I went back and did remove password on everything so that everything
does not require a password.

I went back and checked the restrictnullsessaccess, deny access to...,
access computer from..., made sure guest account was on, simple file sharing
on, tcp/ip, etc. Both computers have all of the same settings.

I'm trying everything that you ask, and will continue as long as you try to
help me. This is a difficult problem, it took me almost 2 months to find
someone that could fix it. When Carey Holzman fixed this, he resolved an
issue on TECHNOMANCER that prevented it from talking to GIR despite GIR being
able to grab files from TECHNOMANCER.

Thanks again.

OK, let's start from the bottom up. Check the status of the necessary network
services, run from both computers. Remember to download PSTools (free) first.

I just read an article on your site that didnt make a whole lot of sense. I
thought it might be worth noting though. Both pc's run an nforce motherboard.
I don't have the ipconfig screen that you show. But, I still felt it might be
worth mentioning.

Well, we haven't looked at "ipconfig /all" yet, just "browstat status", so the
subject of the network adapter never came up. But that's certainly a
possibility.

It's definitely something on Gir, assuming that Guest on both computers is
equally activated.

And if the nForce is involved, that's surely a candidate for the problem. Are
both nForces the same hardware model? Are they running the same driver
versions?

Let's look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer.

G

Guest

ok if you go to the top I have the browse stat for each computer
(technomancer twice by accident) and I have the ipconfig /all for
technomancer. but I'm going to include them reposted here for convenience.
(ACTUALLY, look at it now, I've noticed that when I reset my router and such
today it changed some things so I guess its good I decided to post it anyway.

Ok... so today I ran into some issues when I tried to follow the stuff about
the nforce thing, I accidentally deleted a driver that I wasnt supposed to.
Long story short, I had to reinstall all my nforce drivers and whatnot to get
my ethernet working again. I also had to reset my router. In doing so, I'm
now seeing that whereas before the browstat was fine for both computers (see
post numbers 2 and 3 at the top) they are now a bit different showing my pc
(technomancer) not to be listed as a backup server. I thought I got
everything back to where it was before I messed with my drivers since my pc
can access the net and see GIR but not access anything on Gir, and gir can
access the net and grab files from me.

I'm going back through the other settings above to make sure nothing else
has changed..

Technomancer is running a GA-7N400-L and she has a GA-7N400S-L..

I don't know how to get the driver versions. I know I need to go to my
computer, right click it, go to properties, go to hardware, go to device
manager, but I'm not sre exactly which driver there I need to be paying
attention to.

Ok... so today I ran into some issues when I tried to follow the stuff about
the nforce thing, I accidentally deleted a driver that I wasnt supposed to.

OK, to make this work for us let's do it right.

We don't know what the problem is. Whenever you make any change to either
computer - re install a driver or tweak a setting - you may affect the network.
The diagnostics are there to help us figure out where the problem is. If you
make any changes, any one of the previous diagnostics may change.

Make it easy on us both. When you make any changes, rerun all 4 tests x 2
computers, and post all 8 logs, as updated. Don't guess at what you think has
changed - let's look at all of it.

And when you read an article about the problem, ask questions before deleting
drivers that you're not supposed to. Please.

well those are the current logs.

I went back through everything (the ACls and all that). so the only thing
that has changed is in those logs. None of the settings you ahve previously
asked me to check have changed. The problem is still the same as before,
except that now my browstat log is different. Perhaps this may lead to some
other problem later on, I don't know. But, I was clear about what exactly has
changed and what has been done, so that I can be as helpful as possible for
you.

I appreciate your help.

Well, we're not done. If browstat has changed, let's see what it is now. It's
easier to work from direct examination, than from a description. And if you
admit that you don't know everything about the computer, maybe an updated
"ipconfig /all" too.

There are several other diagnostic procedures that I have in mind, depending
upon what we see in "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all". Be patient.
