Domain rename ?

I know that you can rename a domin with Windows 2003 Srv, but I also know
that you can do the same thing with windows 2000 AD (as long as the 2K ad is
in mixed mode).

I have a standalone domain/forest that I need to integrate into the present
structure of a secured root domain. At present the naming convention of the
standalone domain is the same as the desired outcome, however it needs to be
a child of the root.domain forest.

I would like to know of the pro's and cons of the following scenrio:

desired AD structure
root.domain
\
child1.root.domain

current design:
root.domain ------trust-------- child1.root.domain

Is it better to use the windows 2000 domain rename structure ( non support
MS practices) or would it be easier to use the windows 2003 rendom.exe tool.
It seems at first glance it might be easier to use the Windows 2000 structur
for my scenerio.

as usual any suggestions are appreciated.
thanks in advance

What is this?

AFAIK to rename a Win 2k domain it must be in mixed mode, you add a NT 4.0
BDC, replicate, run dcpromo on all AD DCs, promote NT 4.0 BDC to PDC then
start the upgrade over again setting the correct domain name, and domain
designation.

Besides renaming the domain will not make it a "child" domain. Adding a
child domain to a parent is done during dcpromo.
