domain controllers cannot find global catalog

I am running three domain controllers on my network. yesterday I got the following message from win2k server- cannot find global catalog whenever anyone tries to log in. I have looked at several documents that tell you how to do a nonauthoritative restore. My situation is this I am running win2k server sp4 with Veritas Backupexec using a fastor 8000. Can I do a restore using this setup on all three servers? What I would like to do is just somehow domote the three domain controllers and then make a domain controller of the same name on a brand new server that I have just setup. Could that be done and if so how. thanks.

Dennis,
I've answered in another more recent your post on same topic. To answer your
questionsin this post, I would suggest you not to hurry with restoring from
backup since (re)assigning Global Catalog FSMO role to one or more of your
domain controllers seems to be much more simple task while restoring from
backup may be a challenge depending on your setup and especially if you do
not have tesetd restore procedure in place.
Just be sure to read articles I've mentioned in another thread. I''l add a
link here too just in case.

BTW issue described in article as different from your but the couse of
problem is the same - absence of working Global Catalog server.

If all the servers are in the same domain, there is absolutley no harm in
making all of them GCs.

That's a recommended practice. You only have to worry about this in a
massive forest with lots of poor WAN links... In smaller forests (and
especially single domain forests) make all DCs GCs...
