outlook dialer, but it appears not to work at all with a dsl line...does it
only work with a modem and not thru a network connection?

You are correct. Outlook's Phone Dialer has limited functionality. Its main
purpose is to access the Contacts phone list and optionally log the called
number in the Journal. You must have a regular phone attached to the PC via the
modem in order to use it as a dialer.

To use the PC as a telephony device, your modem must be a voice-modem type, and
they are normally supplied with telephony software to handle the Windows and
phoneline interface requirements.....but naturally this would be independent of
Outlook's interface.
