reports that indicated three year ink jet costs and based on the weekly run of
pages, indicated a cost of $1200+ for a Lexmark and about $600+ for another
brand.

The printer comes with half full cartridges. These cartridges are called
"standard yield" from lexmark.
When you buy new ones ask for the normal ones: 10N0016 (#16) and 10N0026
(#26) (high yield, according to lexmark), they cost the same and contain
double the ink.
Most people not knowing it, they buy the half capacity ones again and again
in same price as the normal !!!

No, it's not likely correct. The inkjet companies use the best case
scenario, and 5% coverage is barely typical unless you are printing
large margined sparse text. Further most inkjet printers go through
some type of cleaning cycle, and that also isn't typically added to the
ink loss. That's why it says "up to...". Keep in mind if you are
printing any images, color or black and white, use much higher coverage
than 5% per color. A photographic 8 x 10" image might use 40% or more
coverage per color.

If you want a printer which keeps consumable costs down for black and
white text, a laser printer is a better alternative, although
acquisition costs might be somewhat higher.

Sometimes the driver has a draft or economy mode. The difference
between the print quality, beyond that mode, often has minimal ink use
differences. Speed will be increased at lower resolution, but often the
dot size is increased to fill in the "gaps".

I'm actually quite amazed you got 1100 prints from your printer on a
1200 5% coverage cartridge. How did you determine the number of pages?
