Does AV get older ?

'Scuse my poor english.

We are using in our compagnie the Norton antivirus 5.0 for Windows NT.
We use it mainly for Win 2K boxes and we have a kind of interesting
licence. But I just realize that NAV 5.0 is already 5 years old or so,
and get a little bit worry about the quality of this AV.
For instance, we run some kind of old PC's and maybe the algo are now
more efficent than 5 years ago.
What do you think ? Is it time to think about something else ?
In the same maner I wonder if AV can have some kind of security holes.
Let's imagine a run a automatic live update every day/week/whenever at
the same time. It could be easy for a bad guy to use a security hole
since the port would be open regularily ...

Any comment ?
As the saying says : any help would be greatly apreciated

a) there *were* security holes in older versions of live update as i
recall...

b) scanner engines need to be kept up to date as well as the virus
signature databases... comanies make improvements to the engines and
then make signature updates that won't work optimally (ie. some viruses
that you should be able to detect won't get detected) unless you have
the up to date engine...
