Does anyone understand Outlook2k3 cached mode???

J

jim

We have a user who is unable to view new email in the root of his inbox past
a specific date when using Outlook2k3 in cached mode. However he has a few
rules setup that filter specific email to subfolders in his inbox. New
incoming messages that meet these rules can be viewed. Here are the
facts...

*User is using Outlook2k3, SP1. Mailbox is on Exchange2k SP3.

*All new email is viewable via OWA, Outlook2k, or Outlook2k3 when cached
mode is turned off.

*Administrators with higher Exchange permissions can see all email with
cached mode turned on if they login to the PC as themselves.

*Logging into any PC as this user produces the same problem (ie, it isn't
specific to his PC or that installation of Outlook).

*Turning off all the rules prevents any new email from being seen in cached
mode.

*We've tried deleting the OST and re-downloading all his email, but the
problem persists.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

Dear Jim,

Thank you for posting here.

Based on my knowledge, if the issue persists for this mailbox on any PC, it
is much possibly caused by corrupt mailbox. We could follow the steps below
to export all the information in the mailbox as .PST file, and then remove
the corrupt mailbox of problematic user object, and create a new mailbox
which doesn¡¯t contain corrupt information, at last we can import .PST
mails to the new mailbox. In the process, please rest assured that we can
recover a regular mailbox without any loss in the content.

1. In Outlook, Export all mails in Mailbox as .PST file.

Please follow the instruction below (Section: Exporting Personal Folder
Data) to export all mails in the mailbox as .PST file.

287070 OL2002: How to Back Up, Restore, or Move Outlook Data
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=287070

Please note article 287070 is also applied to Outlook 2003.

2. Remove corrupt Exchange Mailbox for problematic user.

1). In Exchange 2000 computer, launch Active Directory Users and Computers.
2). In the Users Container, right click the user with corrupt mailbox,
click Exchange Task.
3). Click Delete Mailbox and click Next to finish the process.

3. Run Cleanup Agent

1). In Exchange 2000 computer, launch Exchange System Manager.
2). Expand the mailbox store where the problematic mailbox located, right
click the mailboxes container, select Run Cleanup Agent.
3). Then you will see the problematic mailbox with a red X.

4. Create a new mailbox for the user.

1). In Exchange 2000 computer, launch Active Directory Users and Computers.
2). In the Users Container, right click the user with corrupt mailbox,
click Exchange Task.
3). Click Create a new Mailbox and select Mailbox Store for the new
mailbox, click Next to finish the process.

5. In Outlook, please create a new user profile as the instruction in the
following article, and verify whether the issue disappears.

829918 How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829918

If the issue disappears, we can import all the mails in the original
mailbox to this new one. For detailed information to restore PST file to
mailbox, you can still refer to the article 287070 above.

Hope this helps. If there is anything I can do, feel free to let me know.
Thanks for your patience and have a nice day!

Thanks & Regards,

Lee Li

Then why are administrators able to open the mailbox when they login as
themselves (i.e., not as the effected user)? That would seem to suggest
that it's something with the permissions on the account??? Please advise..

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your update. It is possible for the permission related mailbox
attribute is corrupt. If what you described "Logging into any PC as this
user produces the same problem" is true, the issue is much related to
Exchange mailbox side instead of Outlook Client Side. You can have a try on
the suggestions in my last thread, and verify whether the issue persists.
Please rest assured that the mailbox content will not be lost during the
process. If the issue persists after the steps, please let me know so that
I can provide further assistance on this problem. I am looking forward to
your reply.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Thanks & Regards,
