Documents and Settings Files

I had to re-install Windows XP a couple of times and now I have several copies of the Documents and Settings files for each user e.g. Fred, Fred.Desktop, Fred.Desktop.000, Fred.Desktop.001. It looks like Windows is using the highest numbered one (Fred.Desktop.001). Can I remove the other versions and can I then rename Fred.Desktop.001 to just "Fred".

Sometimes when changing users on the machine it takes a long time to save settings and I suspect it is because I have extra versions of these files.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi,

You can delete the invalid accounts (they are all tied to the other
installations), but you cannot rename the one that you keep (and no, you
can't keep the other ones or import them into the current installation).

Next time, try doing a repair installation which will preserve the existing
accounts:

Not exactly.

You CAN rename any user on the computer to what ever your want. This
doesn't change the name in the "D$S" folder, just the log on name and
subsequent system and program uses of this name.

Computer managment>Local Users and Groups>Users>double-click on "your
username" and enter what you wish.

You can import any non-system files from an old profile, such as all the
files in your "MY Documents" , My Music, My Videos, etc.
