I am using Word (Office XP Pro). Sometimes it crashes for
no reason. This happened today. It was a large document,
109 pages. I noticed after the recovery the size of the
file is dramatically different. The size was over 4 MB
and now it's less than 1 MB. Everything seems to be
there. How can this be?

You might be able to solve your problem by checking a couple of things. Click on "File", then "Properties" and make sure the check box in front of "Save preview picture" is unchecked. If it is checked, it saves a preview copy of every picture in your document, which increases the size of the file. Resave your document and see if that helps

Another thing you may want to check is to make sure you are not using the versioning feature in Word. This feature stores previous copies of your Microsoft Word 2002 document within that same file. To disable automatic versioning, click on "File", and then click on "Versions". Make sure that the check box in front of "Automatically save a version on close" is cleared and click on "Close." To remove previous versions, click " File" and click "Versions." Select the version of the document that you want to delete, holding down the CTRL key as you click each version to select more than one. Click "Delete.

Let me know if eitther of these solutions help.

Hi Barbara,

109 pages doesn't even come up to medium size in Word. I have documents with
thousands of pages with a table of contents and cross-references.

There are many possible causes for file bloat. Here are some suggestions:

Turn off the Fast Saves option if it is on.
Turn off Words Versions feature if it is on.
Turn off Track Changes if it is on.
Use styles to format your text rather than direct formatting.

Do not embed pictures in Word files. Instead insert links to the pictures so
that they display in your document but are not actually part of it.
