Document Map showing regular text lines

In Word 2000 and 2003, I have set my chapter headings to use a modified
Header format, so they will show up in the Document Map. Some spurious lines
show up that have nothing to do with either outlines or headers. They are
simply dialogue lines, usually one line of text, that seem to be confusing
the map because they are short. However, this is totally random. Lots of
similar lines do not show up on the map. Is there any way to fix this?
