I always thought it did and that keeping the desktop free of actual files rather than shortcuts was good sense but haivng seen how many techie colleagues use thier desktop I have come to question this, what is the answer?
If it's just sitting there why would it require RAM?
You can use your task manager to show you what is using your memory.
