Do I need to reinstall Ms Access 2003?

When I open my database, then click on Queries>New>Simple Query
Wizard, the "Simple Query Wizard" form appears with a Query selected
in the Tables/Queries drop down box. "Available Fields" and "Selected
Fields" are both empty.

When I click on the "Tables/Queries" drop down to select a Table, I
get the following message:
"The expression On Got Focus you entered as the event property setting
produced the following error: The text you entered isn't an item in
the list."

The cursor turns to an hour glass, and remains that way until I exit
out of Access. I am allowed to proceed to create a new query by
selecting a table, but again, I have to muddle through this with the
cursor as an hour glass.

The problem always occurs with a specific database, but not all of
them.

Can someone explain the problem?

If this is occuring with only one database and it work fine in others, then
no I would not suspect this of being an application issue with acces, but
rather a database issue.

Always do a backup before continuing with any further troubleshooting!

When was the last time you did a compact and repair? If you haven't, do so.

If you did it recently, then I might suspect database corruption. For more
info, take a look at: http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/corruptmdbs.htm

Thanks for the reply, Daniel. And good articles by Allen Browne.
However, nothing there helps me.
I created a new database and turned off "Name AutoCorrect" on the
General tab.
I then exported all tables, queries, forms and reports.
I receive the same error when trying to create a new query.

Anyone else have a suggestion?

Try to do the same again, but exporting tables, queries, forms and
reports _separately_.
That is, forst export only the tables and see whether you receive the
error. If not, export the queries and check again whether the error
comes, an so on.
If you are so patient, you shlould import _every_ table, query and so
on separately, till you get the corrupted element.

Good suggestion, Marco.

I exported all the tables with no problem. I then exported the
queries, one at a time. When I try to create a NEW query, the table/
queries box defaults to what ever query that is available. And when I
try to select a table, I get the error. All of my queries cause the
same problem, even with only one (any one) of them exported.

Puzzling....

And I just now sent the file (with all the tables, and one query) to
my wife, who has Access 2007, and I was able to create a new query
just fine. It's hard to believe that the DB is corrupt.

It really sounds like you have a bad Access installation - perhaps some .dll
file is damaged or corrupt. Have you run both A2003 and A2007 on this machine?
Perhaps you're having the same problem I did, with an installation of one that
went only partway. If you do have both, try running the one you don't want to
use, letting the "Installing..." script run to completion; reboot; then
install the other, letting it install completely. If that doesn't apply (or
doesn't help), uninstall Office completely; use the Office cleanup tool from
Microsoft to completely clean it out; and reinstall Office.
