Do I need a sitemap page?

J

John

All I see is a blank page.

Now that's something I never expected ! Do you have Javascript
prohibited or something ? It's possible I was updating it when you
attempted access. I've resolve all but one of the errors on the page.

HTML Validator says :

document.write('</style>')

line 28 column 22 - Warning: '<' + '/' + letter not allowed here

But do note that I don't have any problems viewing it in FP, IE6 or

All I said was I see it now, as opposed to my first visit where it was
blank. Did I say anything about it being bad? ;-)

I got an error page about a broken link.

This doesn't worry me, as others are looking into this, but I am wondering how dows one set up such an error page to replace the
standard system error messages (in this case a 403)

Most decent hosts allow you to direct error requests using their
control panel. I think all it really does is edit the .htaccess file.

Hi Trevor, I have finished my site map. Although it's not exactly yours, its
what my husband wants, and have to please him if I can, and he likes the 2
columns. But, because of yours, I learned alot, for some reason the
navigation was confusing for me, and you showed me so much. I also learned
how to use code, by studying what you did.

I will insert the site map code for you to see, I have not published it yet,
I want to finish the other changes I am making, the links at the top, and
bottom, in the correct order, and just being consistant. You gave me great
suggestions. You will notice on my map, I have changed the order of my pages
a bit, nothing major, but after really studying the order I had placed
things, it makes more sense to me. For instance, the sculpture pages being
first, as opposed to About RL, since I am not trying to sell him, lol. Many
thanks Trevor for your help and suggestions!

I hope you like it:)

Susie,
I think it's looking great.

I did think that 2 columns would detract from understanding the structure, but now that I look at it, I can see that it isn't a
problem - it is quite clear that column 2 is a continuation of column 1, and this way makes better use of the space available.

A couple of questions.
1. I note this line of the table.
I assume it is part of the links you are still working on and is to appear on every page. Otherwise, it appears to contain a link to
itself.
<tr>
<td class="sublink" align="right" width="655">
<a href="http://www.rlblair.com/">

<td class="gtsep" align="center" width="10"></td>
<td class="sublink" align="left" width="94">
<a href="sculpture-by-rl-blair-sitemap.htm">Site Map</a>
</tr>

BTW, for correctness the last cell tag should be closed, i.e. </td></tr> not </tr>
(I just happened to see this, I haven't gone through the code in any detail. As an old colleague of mine used to "If it works, use
it.")

2. Do you need the <br> here, which causes a blank line between the heading and its lower levels?
<span class="label"><b>About Sculpture by R.L. Blair</b> <br></span>

FYI: Search engine will not read down column one and then jump to the top to read column two.

Hi Trevor, I patterned my sitemap after this one
http://support.microsoft.com/library/toolbar/3.0/sitemap/en-gb.mspx
and they have the site map link along with home link on the top right, so I
did, I figured there must be a good reason, maybe search engines?

Your question> 2. Do you need the <br> here, which causes a blank line
between the heading and its lower levels?
I did that because it was the only way I knew to get my link for the page
underneath the title like Bear sculpture, (called the label) and when I
preview in browser, theres no blank line, hmmm, maybe when I publish there
will be? This is how microsoft did theres, (I dont have a blurb)
<td class="bullet">•</td><td><span class="label">Downloads<br></span><p
class="blurb"><a href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/">Downloads</a></p>

The only thing I couldnt figure out is how to make the bullets lighter grey,
and smaller bullets in front of the links, and a vertical line between the
columns. But, thats ok, I am not going to worry about it.

The last <tr> Did you mean this one? I just fixed it. The validator didnt
catch it, thanks for seeing that.
</p>
</td>
</tr>
</table>

Thanks so much for looking:) You would not believe how long I worked on it!
I am now trying to learn to do a css spreadsheet.

Hi Thomas,
Ok, the search engine wont, even though I have written it that way, one
after the other? Will this code that seperates the columns prevent it from
going to the next column in? <td width="10"><div

I assume it is part of the links you are still working on and is to appear on every page.
Otherwise, it appears to contain a link to itself.
<tr>
<td class="sublink" align="right" width="655">
<a href="http://www.rlblair.com/">
Home</a></td>
<td class="gtsep" align="center" width="10"></td>
<td class="sublink" align="left" width="94">
<a href="sculpture-by-rl-blair-sitemap.htm">Site Map</a>
</tr>

BTW, for correctness the last cell tag should be closed, i.e. </td></tr> not </tr>
(I just happened to see this, I haven't gone through the code in any detail. As an old colleague
of mine used to "If it works, use it.")

2. Do you need the <br> here, which causes a blank line between the heading and its lower levels?
<span class="label"><b>About Sculpture by R.L. Blair</b> <br></span>

Hi Trevor, I patterned my sitemap after this one
http://support.microsoft.com/library/toolbar/3.0/sitemap/en-gb.mspx
and they have the site map link along with home link on the top
right, so I did, I figured there must be a good reason, maybe search
engines?

Yes, yours looks very much like that and I have no problem with it.

I am not sure I can explain what I mean about the Site Map link.

Basically, it is this:
I am on the Site Map page and I see a link to the Site Map page.
Why do I need this as I am already there?
The reason that I thought of was that this link appears on every page, so the fact that it has a link to itself doesn't matter. Each
page will have one link which is to itself. I have exactly the same on my website. When you look at my Home Page, there is a link to
the Home Page, but it is because all pages have the same links. It is not worth the effort of tailoring each page so that it does
not have a link to itself.
Your question> 2. Do you need the <br> here, which causes a blank line
between the heading and its lower levels?
I did that because it was the only way I knew to get my link for the
page underneath the title like Bear sculpture, (called the label) and
when I preview in browser, theres no blank line, hmmm, maybe when I
publish there will be? This is how microsoft did theres, (I dont
have a blurb) <td class="bullet">.</td><td><span
class="label">Downloads<br></span><p class="blurb"><a
href="http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/">Downloads</a></p>

OK. That make sense.
What I was saying was wrong. It is not the <br> causing the blank line. As you say, you need it to put the next stuff on a new line.
This is what it looks like in IE6

I just pasted this here, so it is WYSIWYG. Note the blank line between the title and the details
Something is causing an extra line, but I can't see what it is. I wish I could :))

The post as I look at it doesn't have the blank line, but it does in IE6

Trevor, may I ask, how do you look at my page in IE6?
Ok, after Thomas wrote this>" FYI: Search engine will not read down column
one and then jump to the top to read column two."
I am concerned about using my sitemap now, and am thinking that yours is
better, plus, yours is 5 KB, and mine is 12 KB. I have a question about the
way you have designed the sitemap you made. The pages that do not have a
mapsection title, the ones that only have one page, like Garden Arbor, is it
ok to add a mapsection above it, so it has the black and white title? Its
easier to read, and shows a catagory clearly. Is that messing with the
navigation?

Thanks:)

I forgot to mention, I agree about the sitemap link being on the site map
page, and whats strange is, I looked around microsoft, and they don't have
site map link on top of the other pages, so I am baffled as to why they have
it there. But I know they know more than me:)

Well, this a nice long discussion - not that I mind , it's all fun to me. (Well, it's not fun that you are wanting to get your site
right, and not getting there. What's fun is trying to find out what *is* the best way to get there.)
how do you look at my page in IE6
I cut and paste the code you posted into a text file, then save it as "susiesitemap.html". (The name doesn't matter, but the
extension must be .html or .htm)
Then in Windows Explorer, double click on the file name. If IE6 is your default browser (it is possible but not likely that it is
not) then it will open in IE6.
Thomas wrote this ..........
I don't quite know what Thomas' statement means. I don't know anything about how search engines work.
Thomas has much more knowledge than I, so we have to defer to him.
I am thinking that yours is better
"better" is a matter of taste. As I said, I quite like the two column format.
yours is 5 KB, and mine is 12 KB
Why is one bigger than another?
Probably because yours uses a table and mine doesn't.
is it ok to add a mapsection above it?
Yes, I thought about how to deal with "stand-alone" pages (my phrase).
There are two ways (as I see it)
1. Title + page
Garden Arbor
Garden Arbors - Tropical Hawaii
2. Title only
Garden Arbors - Tropical Hawaii

I think either way is OK. Perhaps 1. is more consistent.

Does this have any effect on search engines?
Again I don't know.

Thanks again Trevor, you have been great to help me so much, I will always
appreciate it:) I hope I have not been a bother. I will eventually get my
site right, thanks to you and all the other helpful people here. I am off to
get some sleep, it's way past midnight. My husband thinks I am married to
this computer:)

Search engines, screen readers, etc. all read the way you would read a page in a basic book, top to
bottom.

So if you have two columns, then first line in both columns would be read, then second line and so
on.

Actually, it may not matter for the search engines.

Hi Thomas,
Ok, the search engine wont, even though I have written it that way, one
after the other? Will this code that seperates the columns prevent it from
going to the next column in? <td width="10"><div
class="gutterPlug"></div></td><td width="1" height="100%"><div
class="verticalRule"></div></td><td width="10"><div
class="gutterPlug"></div></td><td width="50%" class="partition">

Thanks,

Hi Trevor, I have finished my site map. Although it's not exactly
yours, its what my husband wants, and have to please him if I can,
and he likes the 2 columns. But, because of yours, I learned alot,
for some reason the navigation was confusing for me, and you showed
me so much. I also learned how to use code, by studying what you did.

I will insert the site map code for you to see, I have not published
it yet, I want to finish the other changes I am making, the links at
the top, and bottom, in the correct order, and just being consistant.
You gave me great suggestions. You will notice on my map, I have
changed the order of my pages a bit, nothing major, but after really
studying the order I had placed things, it makes more sense to me.
For instance, the sculpture pages being first, as opposed to About
RL, since I am not trying to sell him, lol. Many thanks Trevor for
your help and suggestions!

I hope you like it:)

Susie,
I think it's looking great.

I did think that 2 columns would detract from understanding the structure, but now that I look
at
it, I can see that it isn't a problem - it is quite clear that column 2 is a continuation of
column 1, and this way makes better use of the space available.

A couple of questions.
