Do I have a virus or what?

I just received the below e-mail from a young friend of mine. I called her to
see if she sent the information with the problem computer, or another computer.
I told her about using another computer if she suspects a virus.

I told her how to get rid of the error message.

"I have encountered a major problem with my computer and I was hoping you could
help me. It has been going on for a while, but I have been busy and just never
have the time to fix it, or try too anyways. Well I have a new HP pavillion
f1503 computer, and I am almost positive that it has a virus. First, microsoft
wont let me open anything, but the internet. I cant open my computer, or any
thing on my desktop, so when I download things I cant open them. It says
"microsoft has encountered a problem, please report." Second, my computer will
have these shutdowns, where it looks like someone takes a razor blade and
slashes through my screen, and the sound goes crazy and everything. and Third,
I am unable to stay online for longer then a half hour before it pops up saying
internet explorer has encountered a problem, then you have to push the "ok"
button, and it all turns off, not the computer, but the internet. PLEASE HELP
ME! It's soo annoying, and its a brand new computer."

I just found out the model number she sent to me is the model number to her
monitor. I'm trying to reach her now for the CPU model number, and a little more
information about her computer details.

That sound more to me like a damage pice of hardware or a bad driver
instalation. both of wich should be covered under warrenty if it is a new
computer. She should try windows update and see if it offers an update for
the hardware as well as other system fixes. Also symantec.com has a online
virus scanner you could use to check for virus. i think mcaffe housecall
has somethign simular.

I'm leaning a little towards hardware or driver problems.
