OK, I understand the 2k domain can't be a child, but the
person who set this up obviously didn't know this.

The trust between the domains keeps failing, obviously due
to name resolution. Cant use nslookup either.

Another thing I have noticed it the root hints on my
internal server. Shouldn't this point to my externally
hosted DNS servers rather than the 13 internet DNS
servers.

Hello Kevin,

A W2K domain can be a child if dcpromo'd under the right circumstances.

As far as the trust relationship failing, how do you correct that? Are you
using nltest to re-create the secure channel?

As far as name resolution, can you create a secondary zone for the other
domain? Does this resolve your issue?

Leave the root hints alone, you don't need to alter them. You can set up
forwarders to your ISP within the DNS server.

I reset the connection from domain 1 to domain 2, but it
would not work the other way.

This is the error I get when trying to reset the
connection.

I_NetLogonControl failed: Status = 1355 0x54b
ERROR_NO_SUCH_DOMAIN

Im guessing this is a name res problem?

For external trusts, such as between NT4 and W2k, it uses NetBIOS
resolution. If they are on different subnets (can't tell if you posted that
info because I can only see part of this thread), then we'll need WINS. If
the domain names are the same, that can cause a problem too.
