DNS VS WINS

I hope that this is an easy question- Why would I be able to logon via WINS but not DNS? Becuase we already have a DHCP server, this particular server is setup manually in a new forest and all of the workstations are also being manually configured for DNS and WINS. If I configured just the DNS on the workstaton, then I can not logon, so I had to include WINS. What should I check? Also, is there any reason that I really need to use DNS? Which is faster?

I might start with dcdiag on the dc's and the netdiag on the client to help
narrow down a dns registration problem.
