DNS service not starting

Hi,

I was hoping to get some thoughts on this one: On a secondary DNS Server
(win2k) in the DNS snapin, the server has a red "x" over it on the left pane,
on the right, it says "cannot contact the DNS Server. The Event Viewer
contains the following error:
Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7023
Description: The DNS Server service terminated with the following error: the
handle is invalid.

From this server, I can ping to the WWW by IP address only (no host name
resolution).

I would greately appreciate any insights,
AF

Sounds like the service is corrupt. Have you tried to manually start the DNS
service? If so, what are your results?

If that doesn't work, I would suggest to backup the system32\dns folder,
uninstall DNS and reinstall it using a SP integrated i386 source that
matches your current SP level. If not, reinstall it using the original CD
and re-run the service pack and any other updates.

Trying to restart the service yeilds the following: "could not start the DNS
Server service on Local Compter. Error 6: The handle is invalid."

If I were to reinstall the service (or replace the entire server) and
restore a copy of the system23\dns folder, are there any
settings/configurations that might need to be manually reconfigured? Does the
dns folder include synchronization settings, etc.? (this is not an AD
integrated server).

I appreciate the help,
AF

I would first remove the service and then reinstall it under Add/Remove. If
you are gettng a 'handle is invalid", something obviously got corrupted.

No, there are no 'settings' per se in the DNS folder, only zone and Root
server data. The registry contains the specific settings. That is why I say
to copy the dns folder first to another location, then reinstall it.

No need to reinstall the WHOLE server because of one service, unless of
course there are many other service issues and problems with the machine
along with numerous errors that is compromising the machine beyond repair.

Once you've reinstalled DNS, you can copy the data back into the dns folder,
then re-create the zones one by one and tell it to use your existing files.

If the zones only have a couple records in there and are easily
reproducable, then I wouldnt even bother copying the old data before I
reinstall it.
