DNS routing

C

Chris Dove

The domain is a standard setup using dcpromo and DHCP & WINS have been
installed. No modifications have been made to the DNS setup. There are

Domain is called domainname.local
IP range is 192.168.49.1-254
The clients route directly to the router for Internet.
We have 2 Forward lookup zones (1 is . and the other is our domain) and 1
reverse zone

The problem I have is, I have to have the primary DNS server as one of the
External DNS IP's and the internal DNS server as Secondary in order for the
clients to access the Internet.

What do I need to change on the domain?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, you need to delete the . zone. If Internet access is required
it has to go.
Then you must reconfigure all servers and PC's to only use the internal DNS
server for name resolution. Nothing should be configured to use the ISP DNS
server, point everything locally.
Finally, on your local DNS server, configure a forwarder address within DNS
on the forwarders tab that points to your ISP server.

You need to delete the "." root zone from the forward lookup zones on the DNS server. Then point all your clients and servers to the internal DNS server ONLY
for DNS. That should do it.
