DNS problem

My network topology:

|Win2K|---->|Xrouter|----->|Redhat 9 router|--->Internet

My problem is I can access the internet with IP address. But not with the
domain names. I do not have problems with the Linux or MAC machines at the
same subnet as the Windows. I know the IP address of the DNS server of my
school. I put that in the DNS Serveraddress box in the tcp/ip properties. I
can ping the DNS address from the Windows host.

Please advise me on this issue

The DNS server of your school will probably work fine for resolving
school IP addresses. To resolve external internet addresses, you may
have to put an internet DNS server address there or configure an
appropriate proxy.

Thanks John. But the DNS address was given to me by the administrator and it
resolves the external IPs. I was wrong in expressing it as the school DNS. I
have successfully used the IP in non-windows hosts for resolution.

If you are able to resolve Internet names, then you do not have a DNS
problem. If you are able to ping external IP addresses, you do not have a
routing problem. Most likely this is an Internet Explorer settings issue.
Try:

IE/Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings - see if you are
configured to use a proxy server. If not, try checking/clearing the
Automatically detect network settings check box. Also, check your Security
tab settings.
