DNS Problem

I have this weird problem with my Windows 2000 Domain
Controller which is also a DNS server. I'm trying to re-
point an (Alias CNAME)record to become(A Host)record but
it doesn't allow me to do so or tried to delete it but
after I rebooted the said DNS server the Alias CNAME
record keep coming back, i couldn't delete it. This DNS
server is serving an (Internal Private IP) configuration.
My problem is that I'm having problem joining a Windows
2000 workstation to my domain refer to Article #: Q266324.

Or is there any utility I can use to clean my DNS server?

I hope somebody can help me with my problem. Thank you in
advance.

I did stop and re-start the service. I forgot to mention
that I don't want to re-install a new DNS server bec. it's
integrated on my Active Directory and if I do that it
would mess up our network. Maybe it's a last resort if I
cannot fix it. Thank's for your reply anyway.

There is no need to delete the internal records, as they will be created
automatically.
On the client, does the ipconfig/all show that everything is pointing to the
server-IP? How many nics in the server?
What errormessage do you get when you try to join the client?

ipconfig /all showed that everything is pointing to the
server. I can ping the server without any problem using
either the hostname or IP address. 2 NIC on my Server. The
error message is " Your computer could not be joined to
the domain bec. the following error has occured. The
network name cannot be found." Tried using nslookup to
query the DNS server but said its a non-existent domain.

Any idea? What I wanted to know if there's a DNS ultility
I can use to repoint an Alias CNAME record to A Host
record or to just deleting it without coming back.

Thank you for your reply, anyway.

Check the bindingorder of your servernics (Network Connections, Advanced,
Advanced) and make sure the internal nic is on top.
On the external nic only TCP/IP should be bound and the advanced properties,
tab DNS, 'register in DNS' and 'append suffix' should be unchecked.
DNS on both internal and external nic should point to the server-IP only.
Check the DNS-server configuration and make sure it is listening to the
server-IP only. The tab Forwarders should have the ISP-DNS-numbers.
Check the General tab of the reverse and forward lookup zones and make sure
the 'allow dynamic updates' is enabled.

Are you using RRAS as well? In that case make sure you do the regedits in
292822.

Post back the ipconfig/all from the client if you can't get it to work.
