DNS Problem: Resolving ONLY the Domain

A

Andrew Wilcox

Hello All,

I have a Windows 2000 Primary Domain Controller (name:
theNEW4850.theDOMAIN1.com) with DNS installed. When I type in just the
domain name (theDOMAIN1.com) into my web browser, my Exchange IM Client,
Outlook, or anything else for that matter, it comes back a DNS error. If I
type in the name including the computer (theNEW4850 or
theNEW4850.theDOMAIN1.com), everything comes up. The problem is mainly that
the IM Client says that (e-mail address removed)1.com doesn't
exist but (e-mail address removed) does. I would appreciate help in
this matter as I have been on TechNet as a Microsoft Support Engineer said
and it referred me here.

Thank you in advance!

P.S. The 2K box is MSDN software, and my support incidents are gone.

Does IIS have host headers?
The IM client only works on the default host header. Create a separate web
site for the IM website.
The Exchange Website will need a host header for "thedomain1.com" for the
site to come up in your browser.

How do I do that? It's not the IM client that is the problem, I can't
access any service whatsoever if I just type in "theDOMAIN1.com". What I am
wanting is that when someone tries to access any port on this computer (web,
mail, IM, confrence, AD, DNS, ...) by typing in "theDOMAIN1.com" not
"theNEW4850.theDOMAIN1.com".

Thanks,

Andrew

Oh yeah...what's a host header and how do you do that? I'm a Windows NT 4.0
admin...just re-did my whole domain to Win2K.

Did you create your RVP SRV record in the "thedomain1.com" forward lookup
zone?
Create the RVP RecordCreate the Rendezvous Vector Protocol (RVP) record in
DNS. To do this, follow these steps:
1.. Start the DNS snap-in. To do this, click Start, point to Programs,
point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
2.. Expand the DNS server computer, and then expand Forward Lookup Zones.
3.. Right-click the forward lookup zone that you want, and then click
Other New Records on the shortcut menu that appears.
4.. In the Select a resource record type list, click SRV (or Service
Location if it is displayed), and then click Create Record.
5.. In the Service box, type _rvp.

NOTE: There is an underscore character (_) before "rvp" in the preceding
entry.
6.. In the Protocol box, type _tcp.
7.. In the Priority box type 0 (zero).
8.. In the Weight box, type 0 (zero).
9.. In the Port number box, type 80.
10.. In the Host offering this service box, type the Fully Qualified
Domain Name (FQDN) of the Exchange 2000 Server that you want to host Instant
Messaging. For example, type IMserver.example.com.

IMPORTANT: This FQDN is the same as the FQDN that you will use to create
the Instant Messaging virtual server.
11.. Click OK, and then click Done.
12.. Quit the DNS snap-in.

IIS 4 could use host headers, too.
In the website properties on the Web Site tab, click the Advanced button.

In addition to Kevin's suggestions, I just want to ask a couple questions:

Do you have a zone called 'thedomain1.com' in DNS? If you do, does it show
an IP for this entry?
(same as parent) host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

WHen you type in just the domain.com name, as you're indicating, it looks
for the above record. If your zone name is indeed:
theNEW4850.theDOMAIN1.com
and you don't have a 'thedomain1.com zone created, then I can see why you're
possibly getting that result.

If you don't have that zone created, go ahead and create it and create the
necessary hosts records that you need to get to by that name.

I tried to, and it said, "(same as parent folder) is not a valid host name.
Are you sure you want to add this record anyways?".

No, DNS was pre-configured using Active Directory, so the name is
theDOMAIN1.com.

You are 99% right, I didn't have the _rvp record, nor did I have a home
server. But it says, "Logon to the Microsoft Exchange Instant Messaging
failed because of a problem connecting to the server." As well, I still
can't type just "theDOMAIN1.com" into IE without it coming up "Cannot find
DNS".

Is there a blank host in the "thedomain1.com" forward lookup zone?

adding an invalid record would be very good to do.

Yea, it'll bark at you, but you can click OK to create the record anyway.

In Andrew Wilcox <[email protected]> posted their thoughts, then I offered
mine

What exactly is your Active Directory domain name?
Is it thedomain1.com
or
theNEW4850.theDOMAIN1.com?

As for the record creation, as Kevin said, go ahead and say YES to creating
it.

Did you select to create a new Host or Alias?
Should have selected create a new Host. A Cname is an Alias, which is not
what we want here.

As I said before..."the HOST record thedomain1.com could not be created."
The NODE is a CNAME DNS record.

How can a node by an alias? I am using AD-Integrated...is that bad?

Sorry, I see, so it's saying that whatever name you chose, was already in
use as an Alias?
Hmm...
Can you possibly capture that screen shot and post it along with your next
reply? Like to take a look exactly what it shows, if ok with you.

Andrew Wilcox
Andre\/\/\/are
Well, it'snot that it's bad, an Alias is a CNAME - canonical name that
points to another name but not an IP, where a host is a hostname that points
to an IP.

AD Integrated just means the zone data is being stored in AD and not a text
file.

There's more in the background here that's happening and not sure where it;s
failing on you.

Can you post an ipconfig /all of a machine that this is occuring?
Is your external domain name and your internal domain name the same?
