DNS problem after SP4

Djis

I install SP 4 on Advanced server 2000, and I have this
warnning every 2 hours:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5781
Date: 10.12.2003
Time: 11:26:11
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS
records failed because no DNS servers are available.
Data:
0000: 2a 23 00 00 *#..

I read about 5781 Warnning, Microsoft Base Article
259277, but it didn' help me.

Does somebody know something about this?

Djis

Thanks for time

Is this server trying to update to a single label DNS Domain name?
Are any other servers updating records successfully?

Ok thanks for confirming that, there is a new change in SP4 which prevents
servers from updating single label DNS records, this can be bypassed by
setting the following registry keys - the article explaining this is
currently going through a technical review but will be published in due
course......

On Dynamic DNS clients that attempt to dynamically update the single-label
DNS zone add the UpdateTopLevelDomainZones registry key and set it's value
to 0x1:
Note: The term 'client' also applies to Domain Controllers.

a. On Windows XP
DDNS clients:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DnsCache\Parameters
Name: UpdateTopLevelDomainZones
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0x1
b. On Windows Server 2003 DDNS clients:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DNSClient
Name: UpdateTopLevelDomainZones
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0x1
c. On Windows 2000 SP4 DDNS clients:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
Name: UpdateTopLevelDomainZones
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0x1
2. To enable an Active Directory domain members (clients, DCs, DNS
servers) to use DNS to locate domain controllers in domains with single
label DNS names, create the following registry key and set its value to
0x1:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters
Name: AllowSingleLabelDnsDomain Data Type: REG_DWORD Value: 0x1
3. Reboot the systems on which you changed the registry keys for the
change to take effect.

Hopefully this should sort out the issue for you.

Kindest Regards

Jody

Since this started with SP4 I suspect a single label domain name, which is
known to cause registration problems on Win2kSP4.
