DNS DHCP on same server

Hi Tom,

Range should be 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.x. So the startingrange you
mentioned (192.168.2) is not right.

Furthermore, DNS on both internal and external nic should point to your
server-IP (192.168.0.1).

Depends. Make sure that DNS-server is only
listening to
the server-IP. The
ISP-DNS-numbers should be put in tab Forwarders.
Restart DNS-server.
Do you have options 003, 006 and 015 in DHCP- server,

Hi Tom,

Delete the gateway 24.xxxx from your internal
nic.
On the external nic delete those DNS-entries and
point
the first one to your
server-IP (192.168.0.1).
Make sure that only TCP/IP is bound to the
external
nic
and check the
bindingorder.

Ok, I deleted the range. Then I recreated to 192.168.0.1
to 192.168.0.10. I then set a reservation for 192.168.0.1.

Made sure both nics DNS were 192.168.0.1. Rebooted both
machines. Still the same thing.

Any other ideas? At this point I'll set up a VPN so
someone can come in and tell me what I am doing wrong.

Hey, I might have found something, at least I find this
wierd. Maybe its normal, but don't see why, yet.

Trying to browse from the client to the server, thru the
MS Windows Network I get "Sequel is not accessable. You
might not have access to this network resource. Contact
the administrator to find out if you have permission. The
network path was not found."

To me this seems wierd. I'm logging into the client as
Admin. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Tom,

Delete the gateway 24.xxxx from your internal

On the external nic delete those DNS-

Make sure that only TCP/IP is bound to the

No, under DHCP server it says Reservation.

Nothing really in the event logs except this one. Gonna
follow it up.

Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS
records failed because no DNS servers are available.

Ok, got that now. What address should I have for
the
Interfaces tab of the DNS server? Should it just
be
listening on the nic with 192.168.0.1?

-----Original Message-----
Depends. Make sure that DNS-server is only
listening to
the server-IP. The
ISP-DNS-numbers should be put in tab Forwarders.
Restart DNS-server.
Do you have options 003, 006 and 015 in DHCP-
server,
Scope Options? 003 and
006 only point to your server-IP, 015
points
to
your
AD-

-----Original Message-----
Hi Tom,

Delete the gateway 24.xxxx from your internal
nic.
On the external nic delete those DNS- entries
and
point
the first one to your
server-IP (192.168.0.1).
Make sure that only TCP/IP is bound to the
external
nic
and check the

Hi Tom,

It shouldn't be reservation if you mean to exclude the static server-IP from
being taken by another station. Take out that reservation, setup the
exclusion.
For example:
The DHCP scope is 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254
This means that 254 machines could get an IP.
Static IP's should be given to servers, printers, routers. For those static
IP's you setup an exclusion to make sure that those IP's are never going to
be given out by DHCP.
Exclusion is 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.10 for example.

IPconfig on the internal nic is fine, but I am not so sure about the
external nic.
It all depends on that subnetmasknumber and that is one thing I am not good
at (a lot of summing up and all that...)
This would work:
IP 24.220.168.77
Subnetmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 24.220.168.79
DNS 192.168.0.1

Do you see the difference in the 3rd octet? In the above example they are
the same. In your ipconfig the 3rd octet is 168 and 160 and than it will
depend on that subnetmask if that is going to work.

Check on the internal nic, TCP/IP, Advanced, tab DNS if you have checked
'register in DNS' and 'add primary suffix'. tab WINS should have 'enable
netbios over TCP/IP'.
On the external nic, the 'register in DNS' and 'add primary suffix' should
NOT be checked, and tab WINS should have 'disable netbios over TCP/IP'.

Make all those changes, and restart the server and come back with the
results, also errormessages in your logs if you have them.

Ok, I didn't change the external ip address. I really
can't.

I did make the other changes, rebooted, and now I cannot
bind the internal ip address to the dhcp server. I can
put the check mark in, but it doesn't stay. Therefore,
the client now can't pick up an address.

On the DNS tab, did you mean take the check out of "Append
parent suffices of the primary DNS suffix"? Because that
is the only one I saw.

This is the error I am getting in event viewer for DHCP:

The DHCP service is not servicing any clients because none
of the active network interfaces have statically
configured IP addresses, or there are no active
interfaces.

I'm gonna see if I can follow it down. I'm starting more
and more to wonder if its just dns I have wrong.

-----Original Message-----

It all depends on that subnetmasknumber and that is one thing I am not good

This would work:

depend on that subnetmask if that is going to work.

Hi Tom,

Range should be 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.x. So the
startingrange you

Furthermore, DNS on both internal and external nic should

DNS AD zone, with DHCP. I had a

My question is, is that the only
way
to
do
it
when
you
have two nic cards? 1 nic
card
has
the
ip
address
of my
isp provider, while the other is
set
to
192.168.0.1.
Before, the client would pick up a
ip

subnet

never
get
a
default
gateway no matter what gateway I
used.

I don't get this. I can bind my external adapter to DHCP,
but not the internal one.

And the only article I find on it is :298490.

But as soon as I choose that, and go back into it the
check mark is out.

Thats wierd to me.

Another question, when setting up the DHCP scope, it asks
if I want to configure DHCP options, and the next screen
it asks for my router. When I did that I did and gave it
the address of my external nic, 24.220.168.77.

-----Original Message-----

My question is, is that the only

when
you

has
the

Before, the client would pick up a

get
a

-----Original Message-----

Hi Tom,

Delete the gateway 24.xxxx from your

On the external nic delete those DNS-

Yes. One that has the external address and one with the

I meant if we use my 3rd nic, the one I have disabled.

Sorry, I bet you were just cursing at me if I only had 1,

Just to ask, would this be easier if I had another nic
card?

-----Original Message-----
Hi Tom,

It shouldn't be reservation if you mean to exclude the static server-IP from
being taken by another station. Take out that reservation, setup the
exclusion.
For example:
The DHCP scope is 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254
This means that 254 machines could get an IP.
Static IP's should be given to servers, printers, routers. For those static
IP's you setup an exclusion to make sure that those
IP's
are never going to
be given out by DHCP.

In the
above
example they are

On the external nic, the 'register in DNS' and 'add primary suffix' should
NOT be checked, and tab WINS should have 'disable
netbios
over TCP/IP'.
Make all those changes, and restart the server and come back with the
results, also errormessages in your logs if you have them.

Ok, I deleted the range. Then I recreated to
192.168.0.1
to 192.168.0.10. I then set a reservation for
192.168.0.1.

Made sure both nics DNS were 192.168.0.1. Rebooted both
machines. Still the same thing.

Any other ideas? At this point I'll set up a VPN so
someone can come in and tell me what I am doing wrong.

Hi Tom,

Range should be 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.x. So the

Furthermore, DNS on both internal and external nic

My question is, is that

it
when
you
have two nic cards? 1 nic card
has
the
ip
address
of my
isp provider, while the other is
set
to
192.168.0.1.
Before, the client would pick
up a
ip
address
and
subnet
mask, but no matter what it
would
never
get
a
default
gateway no matter what gateway I
used.

Just 2 nics. Did you check the bindingorder and made sure the internal nic
is on top?
Can you post exactly what you setup in DHCP? The scope, Exclusions, Options?
Is there anything in the eventlogs?

-----Original Message-----
Hi Tom,

It shouldn't be reservation if you mean to exclude the
static server-IP from
being taken by another station. Take out that
reservation, setup the
exclusion.
For example:
The DHCP scope is 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254
This means that 254 machines could get an IP.
Static IP's should be given to servers, printers,
routers. For those static
IP's you setup an exclusion to make sure that those IP's
are never going to
be given out by DHCP.
Exclusion is 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.10 for example.

IPconfig on the internal nic is fine, but I am not so
sure about the
external nic.
It all depends on that subnetmasknumber and that is one
thing I am not good
at (a lot of summing up and all that...)
This would work:
IP 24.220.168.77
Subnetmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 24.220.168.79
DNS 192.168.0.1

Do you see the difference in the 3rd octet? In the above
example they are
the same. In your ipconfig the 3rd octet is 168 and 160
and than it will
depend on that subnetmask if that is going to work.

Check on the internal nic, TCP/IP, Advanced, tab DNS if
you have checked
'register in DNS' and 'add primary suffix'. tab WINS
should have 'enable
netbios over TCP/IP'.
On the external nic, the 'register in DNS' and 'add
primary suffix' should
NOT be checked, and tab WINS should have 'disable netbios
over TCP/IP'.

Make all those changes, and restart the server and come
back with the
results, also errormessages in your logs if you have them.

Binding order is yes, internal one on top.

This is the only relevant error in the event logs:

The DHCP service is not servicing any clients because none
of the active network interfaces have statically
configured IP addresses, or there are no active
interfaces.

Even though it IS a static ip address.

Now, to setup dhcp I chose the scope as 192.168.0.1 -
192.168.0.10, after that I then did setup an exclusion of
192.168.0.1, and nothing more. Now, I did not setup any
advanced options on this. But here is the further thing I
do not get. If I got to scope options, and choose dns
name servers, type in the dns server it resolves it to my
external ip address, not the internal one like it did
before. Now this is new, within the first day or two. I
am thinking of just reinstalling and starting over this
weekend, that all of the changes have messed something up.

But I am not sure and would like to figure this out. Did
I even mention I deleted the "." in the dns console. The
way I understood it that makes it so its not a root server
and what your supposed to do. I am not sure if it is
relevant but wanted to post it.

Hi Tom,

It shouldn't be reservation if you mean to exclude the
static server-IP from
being taken by another station. Take out that
reservation, setup the
exclusion.
For example:
The DHCP scope is 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254
This means that 254 machines could get an IP.
Static IP's should be given to servers, printers,
routers. For those static
IP's you setup an exclusion to make sure that those IP's
are never going to
be given out by DHCP.
Exclusion is 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.10 for example.

IPconfig on the internal nic is fine, but I am not so
sure about the
external nic.
It all depends on that subnetmasknumber and that is one
thing I am not good
at (a lot of summing up and all that...)
This would work:
IP 24.220.168.77
Subnetmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 24.220.168.79
DNS 192.168.0.1

Do you see the difference in the 3rd octet? In the above
example they are
the same. In your ipconfig the 3rd octet is 168 and 160
and than it will
depend on that subnetmask if that is going to work.

Check on the internal nic, TCP/IP, Advanced, tab DNS if
you have checked
'register in DNS' and 'add primary suffix'. tab WINS
should have 'enable
netbios over TCP/IP'.
On the external nic, the 'register in DNS' and 'add
primary suffix' should
NOT be checked, and tab WINS should have 'disable netbios
over TCP/IP'.

Make all those changes, and restart the server and come
back with the
results, also errormessages in your logs if you have them.

Tell me this, should me default

should
it
be
the

have it set to the internal.

Just 2 nics. Did you check the bindingorder and made sure the internal nic

Can you post exactly what you setup in DHCP? The scope, Exclusions, Options?
Is there anything in the eventlogs?

Just to ask, would this be easier if I had another nic
card?

-----Original Message-----
Hi Tom,

It shouldn't be reservation if you mean to exclude the
static server-IP from
being taken by another station. Take out that
reservation, setup the
exclusion.
For example:
The DHCP scope is 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254
This means that 254 machines could get an IP.
Static IP's should be given to servers, printers,
routers. For those static
IP's you setup an exclusion to make sure that those IP's
are never going to
be given out by DHCP.
Exclusion is 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.10 for example.

IPconfig on the internal nic is fine, but I am not so
sure about the
external nic.
It all depends on that subnetmasknumber and that is one
thing I am not good
at (a lot of summing up and all that...)
This would work:
IP 24.220.168.77
Subnetmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 24.220.168.79
DNS 192.168.0.1

Do you see the difference in the 3rd octet? In the above
example they are
the same. In your ipconfig the 3rd octet is 168 and 160
and than it will
depend on that subnetmask if that is going to work.

Check on the internal nic, TCP/IP, Advanced, tab DNS if
you have checked
'register in DNS' and 'add primary suffix'. tab WINS
should have 'enable
netbios over TCP/IP'.
On the external nic, the 'register in DNS' and 'add
primary suffix' should
NOT be checked, and tab WINS should have 'disable netbios
over TCP/IP'.

Make all those changes, and restart the server and come
back with the
results, also errormessages in your logs if you have them.

Ok, I deleted the range. Then I recreated to
192.168.0.1
to 192.168.0.10. I then set a reservation for
192.168.0.1.

Made sure both nics DNS were 192.168.0.1. Rebooted
both
machines. Still the same thing.

Any other ideas? At this point I'll set up a
VPN
so
someone can come in and tell me what I am doing

-----Original Message-----
Hi Tom,

Range should be 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.x. So the
startingrange you
mentioned (192.168.2) is not right.

Furthermore, DNS on both internal and external nic
should
point to your
server-IP (192.168.0.1).

I've configured RRAS, DNS, DHCP.

I have the internal connection
at
the
top
for
bindings
order. Do you want the
ipconfig /all
of
the
client or
server?

Tell me this, should me default
gateway
should
be
the
internal connection, ie
192.168.0.1,
or
should
it
be
the
gateway of the external nic?
That
I'm
not
too
sure,
but
have it set to the internal.

-----Original Message---- -
It is not recommended to run
ICS
on a
server.
And
not
needed too.
Check the bindingorder (Network
connections,
advanced,
advanced) and make
sure the internal nic is on
top.
Can you post the ipconfig/all?

I'm setting up a home server
for a
class.
Windows
2000.
DNS AD zone, with DHCP. I
had a
little
trouble at
first,
but got it working by using
Internet
Connection
Sharing.
My question is, is that the
only
way
to
do
it
when
you
have two nic cards? 1 nic
card
has
the
ip
address
of my
isp provider, while the
other is
set
to
192.168.0.1.
Before, the client
would
pick
up a
ip
address
and
subnet
mask, but no matter
what
it
would
never
get
a
default
gateway no matter what
gateway I
used.
