DNS Changes Automatically

I am seeing a wierd phenomenon on my network. I have network of all 2003
server except for the DC's which are NT, I know I know, we are updating them
next weekend, finally. I have 95% of the network is Windows 2000 with the
other 5% being XP. Of the 5%, 3 of the machines are running SP2. Every once
in a while, the DNS server just change to what used to be our DNS providers.

We have DNS servers internal now in preperation for Active Directory. All
the computers point to them. The SP2 machines, will just change from a
192.168.x.x address to a 63.212.x.x, which is our old DNS servers that our
internet prodiver uses.

I can do an ipconfig /release then /renew and all is warm and cozy until the
next time it happens.

I apologize if this has been asked here before, I searched but could not
find anything. I would appreciate any help anyone might have.

Thanks,

Jerel

Jerel,

Although this doesn't answer the question of why this is happening, have you
though about just manually entering the DNS Server IP address? Since you
mentioned releasing and renewing the IP, I'm assuming you having DHCP find
the address. Try specifying instead. Right click My Network Places, choose
properties. Right click the connection, choose properties. Highlight
Internet Protocol and click the properties button. There you can specify a
DNS server.

Hope this helps,
Jon

Manually entering them would work but if we change them, we have to change
over 200 computers. Since I can have DHCP assign them, this makes it a heck
of a lot easier to manage. I specify the DNS servers in the DHCP server so I
have a one place stop for changing DNS.

Sorry about that...I thought you were referring to the 3 XP SP2 computers.
Have you tried flushing DNS when the problem occurs? It may be that the old
addresses are still cached somewhere. Clear all all recent, cached, and
temporary files on the computer. Also, check the machinesHOSTS file and see
if any traces of the old DNS servers are in there.
