DMA Problems

Hi

Just wondering if anyone could help. My XP machine will no longer operate
both my DVD and DVD+RW drive in DMA mode, just PIO mode. This is annoying as
transfers are very slow and cause my CPU usage to go up to 100%. I've tried
telling XP to use "DMA if available", but it's still reporting the transfer
mode as "PIO mode" - my BIOS says both drives can operate at DMA2.

Any help greatly appreciated!

The solution of a similar problem on my computer was that the drive was
disabled in the BIOS. Disabled or not, XP could see the drive, but it would
only use PIO mode.
Another reason is excessive errors in DMA mode.

Hi Jim

The drive is enabled in the BIOS and the BIOS reports it as been Ultra DMA
Level 2 capable, aswell as being PIO 4, but XP refuses to work in anything
other than PIO mode.

Uninstall the controller, open task manager and expand
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers,rt.click on Secondary IDE Channel and select
uninstall, next in control panel run the "add new hardware wizard this will
reinstall the controller you just ininstalled and when it is complete your
drive should be back in DMA mode.

Note: after repeated drive errors it will revert back to PIO mode.

Mike,

That's fantastic! Did as you said and both seem to be working fine now.

Thank you both of you for your replies - much appreciated, as HP were
telling me "uninstall / reinstall" windows which would make me lose all my
data.

Cheers guys!

Glad it worked out for you! :)
Most "tec reps" like the one you talked to don't have a clue what they are
doing, they just read from que cards. My last computer an HP did the same
thing.
