I am extremely frustrated with trying to set up incoming
faxes through Windows XP and through WinFax Pro 10.0. I
have a distinctive ring for incoming faxes and have ended
up throwing money at a problem because no one seemed to
know that XP does not support distinctive ring.
I bought WinFax Pro because one person told me it was
compatible with XP and supported distinctive ring only to
find out that my internal modem did not support
disctintive ring. So I bought a new modem and was
assured that it was compatible with both XP and WinFax
Pro and did support distinctive ring.
Once those were set up I still could not receive incoming
faxes and could not set the modem or WinFax Pro to
recognize distinctive ring.
When I contacted technical support at US Robotics I was
finally told that it was XP that did not support
distinctive ring. Apparently 95, 98 and ME DO support
distinctive ring, but because 2000 and XP were created on
the base of NT, which did not support distinctive ring,
these new operating systems do not have the capability
either.
I was told my only options would be to purchase an older
operating system like ME or 98 so I could use the
distinctive ring option, or I could incur yet another
expense and have my phone company come and install a
separate line in my home to use for faxes only. Since I
have spent more than $800 already on this problem I am
loathe to spend even more not to mention the additional
monthly expense associated with another phone line. The
difference in price is more than $20 per month and
another $55 for installation.
Has anyone had any luck in circumventing this problem?
I know that Microsoft is aware of the problem, but are
they planning to do anything about it??
Since it is virtually impossible to purchase an older
operating system I'm at a loss.
I hope there is someone out there with some advice.
