Dissappearing Disk Space

My system drive has ~39GB free (~ 120GB in files , folders etc) after boot
up.

That free space slowly deminishes to nothing, well 50k !, over a period of
~ a few days. If I reboot the free 39GB is back . Also there is no increase
in in the size of any of the folders as the free space decreases.

Anyone know of the cause, the fix , and why it would suddenly start doing
this?
System Restore is turned on, with the limit set to 1% ~ 2GB

Thanks

If you're doing a lot of work with images or videos or something similar,
without rebooting then perhaps your temp folder is expanding to mammoth
proportions.

Monitor the size of....
C:\Documents and Settings\**YOURUSERNAME**\Local Settings\Temp
to see if that's the case.

If so, the fix would be to periodically delete the files in the folder -
especially after using the culprit program.

Hi Jon
Thanks for the reply.
The 'problem' willl occur without out any pc activity, ie I can leave it
on, walk away , and the disk size slowly and consistantly deminishes.

As I mentioned there is no increase in folder size.
All temp folders are cleaned out.

Vaguely recall a virus that manifests itself with these symptoms too, so
also worth doing a virus scan.

in safe mode and not connected to the internet,
look for which files are being created or expanding.

either take a look-see or conduct a file search starting
with all files (system and hidden) over 1gig in size.....

Also,
1)the system has been checked for viruses and is virus free.
2) the issue occurs whether connected to to the internet or not

Strange. Could be an issue similar to that in this article ie a low level
driver compatibility problem.
Might apply if you've recently installed a new antivirus, backup tool,
encryption product or firewall, made a driver change or installed some other
new software of some sort recently.

Otherwise a "Check disk" may help (may take a good few hours with that sized
disk, though)
Right-click c: in My Computer > Properties > Tools > Check now (under error
checking) > [ Check both boxes ] > Start (schedule for the restart)

The reason I decided to write that, was mainly because "TonyR"

Dear Tony & friends:

Microsoft eats your hard drive space a lot with the Windows Security
Update Facility. I have a new PC since four months, and some Gigabytes
have disappear for that reason. Look at the following folders and all
their sub folders contained in them, and try to know how much hard
disk space they take:

C:\WINDOWS\$hf* and sub folders
C:\WINDOWS\$Nt* and sub folders
C:\WINDOWS\$MS* and sub folders
C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLO* and sub folders

You will have hundreds of folders and sub folders of them in your hard
drive, and after a year, they will take three or four Gigabytes of
your precious hard disk space per year.

I would not suggest to delete them, I am not so expert to give you
that recommendation, but if your hard drive is formatted in NTFS,
declare these folders and all their sub folders compressible. You will
recover between one to two Gigabytes of space.

I think that this Microsoft Policy should be rejected as unacceptable.
Microsoft should announce a time frame where all the garbage collected
as a result of their Windows and Office Security Upgrade Policy should
automatically deleted by themselves.
