Display Windows Address Book in Last Name Order

Does anyone know how to get the WinXP Pro Address Book to display its entries
by LastName, Firstname order? I'm using the MS Office Outlook 2003 Contacts
with WinXP Pro. The "File As" field in Outlook is set for Lastname,Firstname
order, but the Windows Address Book still displays some entries when
composing and email message in the firstname, lastname order rather than by
lastname,firstname order.

The correct menu entry will be in your addressbook, not in a regular
Explorer window.

Yes, I meant the WinXP Pro Address Book that is linked to the MS Office
Outlook 2003 Contacts. In the Outlook Contacts window, there is an address
book icon. When I click that or try to address an email, another Address
Book opens listing the names in firstname, lastname order (not the same order
as the Contacts address book).

My WinXP Pro version is 2002 with SP2. My MS Office Outlook 2003 version is
11.6359.6360 SP1. There is no "Sort by" option in the View menu of Outlook
2003 or in the Address Book window. Any more ideas as to how to fix? Thanks.

If you have no View>Sort by in Windows Address Book, it's due to having
Address Book configured to share contacts with Outlook. I can tell you how
to disable sharing but then you wouldn't have access to Address Book in
Outlook.

Your call.

Thanks, but no thanks. That's not the right answer either. WinXP address
book comes configured to display the names from the Contacts Folder in
Outlook 2003, if that is installed on the computer. It sounds to me like
Microsoft has done a poor job of integrating the two pieces of software so
that they work together properly. If Outlook lists names in alphabetical
order by lastname (which is the standard way of locating names in a
directory-type listing), then the Windows Address Book should be doing the
same thing also. In the Address Book Window, there is a field that says
"Display Names From" and the Outlook Contacts Folder can be selected (it is

Who said anything about an Explorer window. I'm talking about MS Office
Outlook 2003 and WinXP Pro Address Book.

There is no View | Sort by option in the Address Book. If you're using WinXP
Pro with MS Office Outllook 2003, do the following:

1. Open Outlook, click on you inbox, and then click New to compose a new
email message.
2. Click the "To" link to open the WinXP Address Book. When the list of
names appear it should be listing names from the Outlook Contacts Folder
(which are filed in lastname, firstname order). Make sure the Address Book
has "Contacts" in the Display Names From field.
3. You'll see that some of the names are not displayed in the Address Book
(not the Contacts Folder) in lastname, firstname order, makinng it difficult
to locate names for address an email message.

How do I get those names in the Windows Address Book to display in the same
sort order as in the Outlook Contacts Folder? That's my problem.

Is this reversible? If the Address Book does not share Contacts with
Outlook, will Outllook get its information for addressing email messages from
the Contacts folder? If so, then perhaps that will solve the problem. But I
need to know if that is reversible if it does not. So how do I disable the
sharing between Windows Address Book and Outlook Contacts?

It might not be the answer you *want* but, it's how things are, Dennis.
Life will be much more enjoyable if you learn what an application *does* and
work within its parameters instead of trying to make it do what you expect
it should do.

If you want to disable sharing:

Navigate to this Registry key...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\WAB
\WAB4

In right-pane, there should be a DWORD named UseOutlook with a value of 1
(one). Change the value to 0 (zero) and sharing is disabled.

(If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and don't alter any other
DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.

You can export a CSV file from Address Book (File>Export>other address book)
which can then be imported in Outlook.

I respectfully disagree. Applications are suppose to be designed to help the
users be more productive and make their computing experience easier and "more
enjoyable" as you suggest. But when computer programmers only design the
apps to work within their "parameters" instead of designing them to be more
useful to the people who will ultimately use them, then they have completely
missed the boat. A user should not have to go deep into the bowels of an
application or the operationg system to do something as simple as displaying
how informaton is viewed. If the Outlook Contacts app enables the user to
change how its entries are filed and displayed withot having to change the
Windows Registry, then certainly the Windows Address Book can be programmed
to do the same thing. When are programmers going to learn that applications
should be developed with the users' functional needs in mind rather than
their own?

Question for you: If I disable sharing between the Windows Address Book and
Outlook Contacts, when I go to address an email message using Outlook, where
will Outlook get its list of names to display to to me and will those names
be displayed in lastname, firstname order (i.e. in the same order as I
currently have them filed).

Frank,

No wonder you've misunderstood me. I'm not using OE (Outlook Express). I'm
using MS Office Outlook 2003.
