Disk Write Caching - SATA mode enabled

I am trying to determine whether the following is functioning as designed...

In Windows XPSP2, if the computer BIOS is set to enable SATA mode then
Windows automatically enables Disk Write Caching and the option to change it
is disabled.

If I change the BIOS and disable SATA mode, then I can either enable or
disable Disk Write Caching.

As part of the SATA (Serial ATA) specifications, these type of devices can be
"hot-swapped" (removed/reconnected without turn XP off.) Since it seems that
when the hard drive is in SATA mode, XP determines that this can be a
removable device and it seems that Disk Write Caching is turned off on
removable devices.
