After POST and system finished checking EIDE-0...OK,
I got the error message listed in subject line. I ran the rewrite Master
boot record, no difference. then I used install cd to write new boot sector,
no diff. I am getting on by using primary slave as the startup system and I
can access my files by windows explorer. My question is can I overwrite
Windows XP Pro on C: drive and have my data saved or will it erase
everything? Is there something else I can do or check before I reinstall XP
on the C drive? HELP Please! Thanks!

Before you waste too much time, run the drive mfg's diagnostic utility on
the drive to determine if it is in fact failing.

Bruce:
Assuming you have an XP OS installation CD (non-branded OEM or retail
version) that will allow you to undertake a Repair install of the OS, why
don't you try performing such (assuming you haven't previously attempted
this)?

If you do, remember to disconnect any other HDD in your system so that the
only HDD connected during the Repair install process is your "problem" HDD.

Also, if there is any data on the HDD that is important to you, copy such
over to some removable media *before* attempting the Repair install. While
the likelihood of further data corruption/loss is relatively slight even if
the Repair install is unsuccessful, there's always that risk.
