Disk or network error

J

JudyB

When the FE Access2000 database is opened in WindowsXP, sometimes the
database will hesitate for a long time and the error "Disk or Network Error"
will appear. The only option is to close everything down and restart. Any
ideas on why and how to fix?

Judy, this sounds serious, and needs attention.

Firstly, have you split the database, so everyone has their own local copy
of the front end, with linked tables to a shared back end? If that is a new
idea, see:
http://allenbrowne.com/ser-01.html

Second, what Office service patch do you have?
Open the Help | About screen.
If it does not say "Access 2002 SP2" then go to
http://support.microsoft.com
and get Service Pack 2 for Office XP.
Make sure the patch is applied on ALL workstations.

Third, and most importantly, what patch do you have for JET?
Find the file msjet40.dll (typically in windows\system32).
Right-click, and choose Version.
If it is less than 4.0.8015.0, go to
http://support.microsoft.com
and get Service Pack 8 for JET 4.
Make sure the patch is applied on ALL workstations.

After that, open the database on one computer only, and compact/repair
(Tools | Database Utilities). Do this for both the front end and the back
end.

If the problem still remains, it is possible that you have:
- a disk problem (e.g. full, temp folder is invalid, or chckdsk error), or
- a network problem (e.g. faulty connector/cable/switch, excessive
collisions), or
- a corrupted database. See: http://allenbrowne.com/ser-47.html

It might be a disk or network error, or it might be a particularly
nasty type of corruption to which Access2000 was prone. Service
Release 1 should prevent it:

May I suggest Newsgroup Answers MDB? I designed the MDB to assist
frequent newsgroup answerers, such as MVPs, in quickly locating and
pasting in their favourite snippets of answers.

Is this on only one computer? Or several? I'd think that there is
some kind of intermittent hardware problem. Can you, somehow, observe
the network card connection light, if it has one, to see if it's
connected all the time? Or a somewhat faulty cable? Maybe the
hub/switch.

Thanks for the info. Yes, we have split the database into a front-end and
back-end which are both on a network drive, however, we have been unable to
successfully place a copy on each PC. I have a question posted in
microsoft.public.access.multiuser newsgroup about this. We were successful
on a PC that has Windows 98. The rest of the PCs are Windows XP and for
some reason unknown to me, when we try to place a copy of the database on
their local drive, the computer will lock up and the file disappears. The
front-end is used by only 4-5 users at one time (opening the front-end on
the network drive), but problems still occur when more than one user has the
database open.

I will check to see if the correct service packs have been installed. I am
not at the same location as these computers, so it will be a couple days
before I can respond about that. Thanks so much for your advice.

Ump, you click on it. You get a form. You should be able to figure
it out from there.
p.s. will it interface seamlessly with Agent 2.0?)
<g,d,&r>

<chuckle> Does Agent 2.0 allow you to put shortcuts to external
programs to your tool bars?

FWIW I have a desktop shortcut with the shortcut keys set so whenever
I do a Ctrl+Alt+F it automatically brings it up. And similar for my
Palm laptop software and so forth.

Definately worth following up on the service packs.

There is no point splitting without giving each user their own copy of the
front end, even if you have to put each person's front end in their
workspace on the server.

Hope you are able to track down the problem with the disappearing files.
Don't suppose it's just as simple as unhiding the files under My Computer |
Tools | Folder Options | View?

Just a follow-up note. I forwarded your suggestion to the IT person and he
responded back that he will be replacing some switches. Hopefully this will
solve it! Thanks again! - JudyB

Let's hope so. Please come on back if you are still having problems.
