Disk Management error

J

J Lunis

XP SR2
When I try to access Disk Management in the Computer Management screen,
I get the hourglass for 3-5 minutes followed by "Server execution
failed." There is a line at the bottom of "Unable to connect to Logical
Disk Manager service."
DLd and ran Depends.exe and pointed it to services.msc and diskmngt.msc.
In both cases, the file fails to open and I get
"No doS or PE signature found" and "not a valid 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
module."
How do I troubleshoot this error?

Error occurs when opening the Disk Management MMC console in Windows XP:
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/132/1/

Services.msc / Diskmgmt.msc are not executables. MMC.EXE runs them:

mmc.exe services.msc
mmc.exe diskmgmt.msc

Ramesh,
thanks for the help.
I am ignorant of depends.exe except it is supposed to identify errors.
OK, I can find and run MMC.exe. Uncertain how to plug in the msc files.
If I type services.msc or diskmngt.msc into the Program Arguments box, I
get 'the file cannot be found.'

Lunis,

Leave out Dependency Walker, and see the link I posted for a possible solution for the Disk Management error you're facing.

I think we have made good progress Ramesh.
Now when I select Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management, I got
"Dependency service or group failed to start."
Found Logical Disk Manager disabled. Set it to Auto.
Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service was and is in Manual.
Found WebClient disabled and set it to Auto. Don't know if this matters
or not.
Now when I select Disk Management, I no longer get the popup error but
along the bottom I get "Unable to connect to Logical Disk Manager Service"

Hi Lunis,

I understand that the Logical Disk Manager service startup is set to Automatic, and Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service is set to Manual.

Can you also verify if the two services are started and running? If not, click the Start button to start the service manually.

Well, Logical Disk Manager was stopped. Started it.
Now when I click on Disk Management I am back to 'Server Execution failed.'

Don't have a solution ATM, Lunis. Checked the status of DComLaunch service? Disabling that service disables several other things.

Started > Automatic.
Thanks for the help anyway. Still don't understand why running the
DiskMngt.reg file eliminates the "server execution failed" error - but
only for a few hours.
I have been told I may have to do an XP repair. Not looking forward to
it, but I may have no choice.

May be of no value but let me tell you one more observation.
If I run diskmngt.reg before I open Computer Management or immediately
after opening Computer Management, I still get the 'server execution
failed' error. If I don't run diskmngt.reg, I still get the error. The
ONLY time I do not get the error is if I run Disk Management, get the
error, click on Event Viewer (or another seection) and go back to Disk
Management. This is when I get 'Unable to connect . . .'
In addition, every time I try to run Disk Management and get the 'server
execution error' I immediately get this Event Viewer error.
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10010
Description:
The server {4FB6BB00-3347-11D0-B40A-00AA005FF586} did not register with
DCOM within the required timeout.

Lunis,

I'm adding this to my "research" folder. Will blog or publish an article if I find a solution.
