when looking at Gateway Support support site it shows an Image when
Defragmenter is going, similar to what I've seen XP,
My Vista Home Basic 32 bit SP1 it only shows a turning circle
like it always does when a Program is opening, nothing ells
perhaps that's normal or I've screwed up something

Why would you want to watch it defrag?

Silver hair, they removed the graphical interface of the defragmenter from
Windows Vista. Many people have missed it but I can't see it being
re-introduced in future Windows operating systems.

To be honest I never thought much of the user interface. You can see more of
what is going on by using third party defragmenting software such as
PerfectDisk. While you do, unfortunately, have to pay for PerfectDisk it is
worth the outlay.

However, Auslogic Disk Defrag
(http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/index.php) is free and has a good user
interface.
